A clause in the tariff hill now before the United States Senate provides that the tax on cotton ties he increased from 35 per cent to 103 per cent, dollar’s worth of cotton ties which a farmer now purchases, more than three dollars is paid as a tax to the millionaires of the North: at that rate, Darlington County alone pays an ennual tax of $3,00 on its cotton ties used by its farmer’s. Henry Gartner, an inoffensive young grocer, was killed in his store in the suburbs of Charleston, Tuesday night hy a blow on the head from an axe handle in the hands of an unknown assassin The crime is shrouded in mystery; there werj no witnesses, and it*'motive is altogether unknown. In the Florence Convention last week, representation having been de nied several anti-Tillman clubs that had sent up regularly elected delegate the anti-TtUmanites withdrew from the hall, and organizing a separates convention, elected their own officers, ami sent a contesting delegation to Columbia.
