The McKinley tariff bill passed the federal House of Representatives on Wednesday of last week. The Dem ocrats moved to recommit the bill to the ways and means committee, but the motion was lost. Judge Hindman, of the District Court of Iowa, in a recent charge to a grand jury, declared that the Su preme Court of the United States could not annul the prohibition law of Iowa, as it is a matter of States I ights. The anti-Tillman Farmers' Confer ence held another meeting in Colum bia on the 20th inst. The meeting was informal and nothing definite was done. John Hratton and Jas. L. Orr seemed to he the favorite candidates of the conference for Governor. During a slight thunder s t o r m which passed over a portion of Murl- lioro County on May 9th, two negro hands were almost* instantly killed near Henuettsvillc. Two other men were knocked senseless and several mules were stunned. These injured men are now out of danger, however. A Turkish officer and five students forcibly kissed some ladles of the Rus sian embassy in Constantinople re cently. The Turkish government punished the offenders by six months imprisonment and at the expiration of this sentence they will Ik* banished for life to Tripoli. The committee on elections of the federal House of Representatives has decided to make a report recommend ing that Congressman Elliott, of the Seventh South Carolina district, be unseated and that the negro, Tom Miller, be given his seat. Several oth er Democrats will lose their seats, ns the Republicans want a good majori ty in order to pass the federal elec tion law. The village of St Malden, Germany, has been visited recently by se vere hail s onus. On the 22nd inst., the inhabitants gathered in a church to pray for a cessation of the storms. On Saturday morning last one Murray Knotts shot and killed his brother Ben. The coroner's jury found a verdict in accor dance with these facts, and a warrant was at once issued for the arrest of the slayer. If any thing else has been done to ap prehend him, we are unable, af ter careful enquiry, to acertain what it is. When the coroner and the deputy sheriff reached the scene of the killing on Sun day morning. Knotts was there, but it is said that he subsequent ly left. What steps were taken to ascertain how far he had gone ? He has been seen in the neighborhood several times since, and it is even asserted that he went to his father’s house on Sunday night to ask for money on which to go away. Why was not Murray Knotts ar rested early Sunday morning before he had even attempted to leave ? Why have no further efforts been i lade to arrest him since ? These are the questions which are just now agitating the public mind. We under stand that the authorities were lulled into a sense of security by a promise which they receiv ed from Knotts to the effect that he purposed giving himself up. If this is true, they have certain ly been indulgent, to put it mild ly. As he has not fulfilled his promise as yet, it is barely pos- traveler. Our scattering gradually edged up towards pol itics, and from politics in gener al we broached the present as pect of “Tillmania” in this State. Edmund Deas, one of the shining lights of “the great un washed” in this District if not of the State, who was occupying a chair opposite, gave a not un interested audience to our dis cussion, Edmund expressed himself as highly satisfied and pleased with the gap the Till man wedge was making, and he fondly expressed the hope that Tillman would hammer at it, and drive it deep enough in to split the Democratic p arty “clean in half,” if not into smaller sections. He said that when a clean hrazure had been made, the Republicans would tie themselves to one of the splits—he did not know which. That one of the wings would have to have the help of the “Rads.” to give it sufficient strength, and that each win; would coquet with the colore man for his vote.
