Major George W. Barle has
been engaged by (he government
to survey the ronte of the proposed
macadamized road from Florence
to the National Cemetery. Tbe
road will ran from Church Str. et,
and work upon the survey will be
gin immediately.
The streets, are being much in\
proved. Tbe drains are being clear
ed, dead trees removed and more
lamps are being placed where they
are needed. The oak tree sbuidiug
at the lute section of Cashua
Street and the Sqn.ire has been cut
down. Tho tree was fast dying.
The down passenger train was
delayed four hours on Monday and
did not reach Darlington until
12.30 P M The delay is said to
have been due to washouts caused
by the heavy rains in tin* up coun
try on Sunday night. The road
was washed out at two poiu's above
Clieraw and one In* ow that place.

night. The programme consisting

J. M. McMaster, E-q., formerly
of Columbia, but now a hading
lawyer of Birmingham, is visiting
Mr. B. F. VVilliam-on. It was on
Mr. McMastei’s aflidavP, that
Sheriff Smith, of Birmingham, was
arrested for firing last winter ou a
body of men w ho, it will be le
membeml, endeavoted to rescue
some prisoners.
It will be remembered that the
officers of Florence County elected
last (all hold office for only a year,
aud hence unoth r election will be
held this fall. A County Demo
cratic Convention will meet on Au
gust tbe 5th to decide whether
nominations will be made by con
vention or by a primary.

ton Ginning, Milling, Fertilizer and
Warehouse Company held their an
nual meeting on Monday. The old
board of directors was re-eiected.
Immediately after the meeting of
the stockholders, the directors met
and re-elected Mr. C. S McCul
lough, President and Treasurer and
Mr. B. Williamson, Secretary.
The committee appointed by the
several seciet societies of the town

post master we have ever had.
--On the night of the 22nd ult ,
Mi. R. M. Josey was iu ins peach
orchard with a double barrel gun,
when some one name to <*ample the
fruit. Mr. Josey halted him, hut
he didn’t heed him. Boih barrels
of the gun were then discharged in
the direction of the “inspecter’
when several loud y ells were heard
sufficiently lusty to alarm the neigh
borhood. He made his escape w ith
out taking any peaches with him.
We can only suppose that he found
them to bt “not good.”

Power, Presiding Elder, was taken
sick on Satuiday after be had got

—Tiie crops in this sectiou are
glowing finely, aud will, if good
seasouo continue, be up to au aver
age by harvi-sring time. The great
trouble with cottou is that a great
deal of it is quite small for this time
of the year, and unless tbe fall is
late it caunot make a crop before
frost. Coru, peas, potatoes, &c.,

Fort Mill, S. C., June 24.—
The presence ot a huge bear, the
chase and bis despatch, caused con
aider ibie excitement in th|s town
this morning About six o’clock
Bruin walked quietly up to T. G
Culp’s residence, mid would have

ence of a servant, who ran li m
away. The alarm was given and a
number of cilizeus gave chase, but
the bear very soon eluded them,
aud some thought that was the
end of it; but not so. R. G. Gra
ham was soon on hand with his
hounds, aud being joined by U. Ii.
Graham, 11. C. Culp and Dr. Alex
ander Mack, he gave chase. The
chase wa* exciting but sotn ended
in tb<* deal hoi Brum, who was shot
aud killed by II. C. Graham, with
a rifle. He weighed 355 pounds
and would stand ab..ut 7 feet high.
The bear was chased in or near
the towu of Gaucaster la>t Thins
day night, aud on Friday morning
he was seen on the Catawba River,
where he was again chased by a j
party called together by a negro, I
whose cow Bruin attempt'd to cap
ture. Alter a day’s chase and many
times treeing and as many times

to Twelve Mile Creek, where he
eluded his pursuers, and nothing
more was heard of him until this
morning.
