Four of the business houses on Pearle Street have j nntlypr cured an apparatus t* water the street in fiont of their stores. By means of a pump, water is lorqed through hose and it lays tbe dust for some distance around. Tips enterprise is worthy of emulation aud, if all the merchants were to adopt such a plan, the business poition of our town would soon be free from tbe disajjteeable and tiguibleaoine ef fects of dust. Darlington Has The Constitutional Area. Maj George W. Earle has com pleted his smvey of the County anil while he has not, as yet, finish ed bis calculations, he feels certain that it contains the requisite terri tory. The old township map, after t lie formation of Florence County, gave Darlington only 562 miles, but this map did not include Rob- lins’ Neck xx hick, in itself, contains considerable area. The survey fuither showed that the leugth of the county from the Chesterfield (iue to the southern bq-tdry is about three miles greater than the township map gives u, aud that Lynches Creek is two miles tai^ber west. However, for the sake of l, Tmoiiy and good feeling, we re joice that this much vexed que lion is finally settled one way o the Ptber. During the heavy thunder storm ou Sunday afternoon, the signal service flag pole xvas struck by lightning and shattered to “smith ereens.” The electricity set fire tq it, and ' (l a foment it was encircled in flames, but they were promptly quenched by the dieuching rain. The pole was erected in March, 1886. and was by far the tallest in the State, being 132 feet clear of the ground. Tbe work of erecting it cost over 8100, about one third of which was paid by tbe Town Council aud the rest was subscrib ed by citizens. There is some talk qf erecting another iq its place, though it is doubtful whether we will be so “aspiring” next time. Tbp event has created considerable comment, some of tbe wags declar ing that it xyqs just another cjse of Ananias and Sapphira; in other words, that it bad so long predicted rain without success, that it fell a victim to the avenging wrath ot the first storm. Waisli last Sun day morning, and attacked big youngest child about two and a half year? old, inflicting a serious wound, by biting the lithe one on the face. The cflild' has been sick ever since but tfle Docfar thinks there is no danger. Was He Marshal Ney ? Kev. James A Weston, of Hick ory, N. C., was in town last week garnering material for a book which he is writing to prove that Peter S Ney, who taught school in this State aud North Carolina many years ago, was tbe famous Marshal Ney ol France. In 1818 the person in quesii lauded at Georgetowa, S. C., and from thmee he pa me to Cheraw, where he met Bcpj*min Rogers, of Brownsville, Marlboro County. !}ir. Rogers took him fa bis home aud obtained a school for him and he faugbt there for several years under ijie guise of Peter S. Ney.
