A Sad End-
An ol I m.<n named Wilkes, who
clerked for Mr. Calvin Rhodes on
Pearle Stieer, fell *lowu while at
work ou Monday moining, nml died
of h art diseast in half an hour.
As he was utterly without friends
and rel lives several warm hearted
citizens who had heeu kind to him
saw that he was decently buried.
Mr. Wilkes came to Dar iugtnu
last sUHim r, ami very little w; s
known of his previous history. He
said that he was a native ol Texas,
and that he had some great fan ily
trouble which diove him from b< me.
He gained many fri* mis in Dar
lington by his kindly manners.
Last fall Wilkes was brought to
the Sheriff of Dariington charged
with stealing an overcoat from a
gentleman in Florence. Tliepro«e
cutor offered to comprouihe the
case if he recovered his overcoat,
but Wilkes msi.-ttd on going to jail
aud serving out a thirty days sen-
t< nee, saying that he had only coin-
mil ted tbe crime iu order that he
might be put somewhere where lx*
could obtain lodging and food. The
sadness of his lile was only exceed
ed by bis tragic dea b.
A brilliant Entertainment.

Council Proceedings.
At a recent meeting of Ibe Town
Council, it was decided to grant to
the County Commissioners a right
of way along the side of tbe engine
bouse to tbe rear portion of the jail
lot for the sum of *100. Oiders
were given lor tbe purchase of six
addi'ioual street lamps, aud tbe
Mayor was instructed to have tbe
old well filled up on the north aide
of tbe Square. Au Ordinance was
passrd prohibiting the keeping ot
buggies, w-gous aud machinery on
the Public Squate, and those now
storing their merchandise in that
way were ordered to remove it. A
resolution was passed requesting
the Mayor to advertise the advan
tages of the Town in the Southern

tax payers is called to the fact that
May 20th is the last day for the
payment of municipal taxes, and

supper was prepand by Copt. T.
D. Maun, and we have never seen
it excelled iu magnificence. The
hall bad beeu beautifully decorated
by the ladies of the town, aud at
tbe appointed boar, as the citizens
of Floteuce a> d tbeir guests filed
into the room two and two, and
took their positions at the band-

lights, the effect was grand. After
a blessing which was offered by
tbe Rev. W. A. Guerry, Dr. Janus
Evans, who presided, requested the
