the “congiegalion* weie evidently
in earnest, their suggestion was
acted on without deUy, and the
^eldi ra” immediately set out iu the
direction of Caiud' U on borat>b<tck,
without even going to their lodg

their bsggsge. They acted wisely,
ami we congratulate thun on their
discretion. The County is to be
congratulated, too, in being well
r d of the ‘•jiesu,’’ while loo much
praise cannot be bestowed upon the
citiaens who took this action in so
orderly a manner. No viol* nee waa
shown and not even threats of vio
lenoe were uttered. The “elderi* n
were simply led to urderstand that
they were not wanted and they
vanished. The people of Darlings
too, always orderly and law-abid

manner, though the temptation ta
proceed otherwise was particularly
strong.
A TRULY AMKRK’AN DISPLAY.
Tbs centernial of the inaugura
tion of Washington wbiob was cel
ebrated in New York last week was
a grand affair. In its very magni
tude, and in some of the striking
characteristics which marked it,
the display was indeed worthy of
the American people; iu fact, the
immensity of its conception ami
some of the |tecnlur features at*
tending its execution could have
been equalled by no other than
this great Nation with a big “N.”
On the military parade, tb* re were
over a hundred thousand men iu
line, and it took six hours for the
column to pass a given point. A
at riot ly American incident by which
it was morbid was the opportuni
ty which it afforded a member of
the Grand Army of the Republic,
who io marching passed quite near
the reviewing stand, to slip into tbe
hands of President Harrison an
application for offloe. It would
seem that the enterprising Yankee,
particularly if he ia also an office-
seeker, would let pass no opportu
nity afforded him ot >t casting an
anchor to windward.* As another
example of hia thrift and enter
prise, it is stated that some of the
floats and transparencies in the
line bore advertisements of nos
trums, patent washing maebims,
Ao. ‘‘Use Smith's Bile Beans” was
poseibly the mystic symbol which
was displayed on the banner which
preceded the President.
The most striking Latun* o( the
whole celebration, however, was
the grand Inaugural Bsll. to com-
memorale a similar event given in
honor of Washington a hundred
years ago. The diffe'ence between
the conduct of the participants on
that occasion and the revels which
marktd (he grand ball of asi week,
were just about as mat k*d. probably.
Mis ihecoutrastbetween ihestatcly
minuet danced by Washington and
tbe round daucea t f the present
day. Considering the fact, how.
ever, that this ball waa to tie par
ticularly Select, and that the open
ing co'illiou was to be danced on y
by those wh se ancestors htd fig
ured iu the Revolution, it seems
strange that tickets should have bet n
sold to so many who acted like jail
birds, and who turn d the lost
quadrille into a howling paudemon-
mm. The oom-spoxdeut of ike
Sett \Wk Tim* iu describing the
affair says:
