Tbe Grand Lodge of the Knights
of Pythins met at Columbia, Tues
day the 19th lost., to hold their
regular annual meeting and also to
celebrate the twenty-Aftb anniver
sary of tbe founding of the Order

A meeting of onr City Fathers
was held last Friday, at which spe
cial arrangements were made lor
matters of importance relating to
our municipal affairs for the eusn-
iug year. The oontract for keep
ing the roads, bridges, sidewalks,
diaius, Ac., of the town iu good re
pair for the year, waa awarded to
Mr, W. C. Byrd, for 11,600. It was
decided to employ seven men. coon
stituting a paid Are department, at
a salary of 125 per year each. Mr
J. H Eaily sill select the seven
men for this important duty* Mr.
C. Alexander was elected chief of
the Are department and will take
control of the management of tbe
fire department without a salary.
Mr. Alexander has been conspicu-

A meeting of the executive com
mittee of the board of visitors was
held yesterday at tbe Citadel, Gen.
Hagood, Chairman of tbe board of
viston, and Col. C. 8. Gadsden,
tbe resident member of tbe board,
being present. Tbe principal ob
ject of the meeting was to open tbe
bids for the bnilding of the west
wing and to award tbe contract.
The bids were opened and Mr. Rob
ert McCarrell was tonml to be the
lowest bidder, his bid being 122,-
033, and tbe contract, was accord

tract for plumbing and gas fixtures
