soon fonnd out iheir mistake, h« w

to go some time longer without a
town bell.
Alter writing the above sentence,
exactly as it now stan )*, at nine
o’clock on Tuesday night, the tired
reporter closed hi* office ami re

from the labors of the day in a pro
found slnmber. From this be was
rudely awakened at about half-past
three o’clock by a colored man who
was going from door to door in
forming tne people that the town
was on fire. The ftaraes could be
seen pouring from the northeast
portion ot the Public Square, and
five buildings were quickly demol
ished, tbe small bouse on Geo. Wat
son’s marble yard, the two stoiy

Mr. J. J Lucas, Ji., the express
agent, who slept just back ot his
office in the Brown building, aays
that the fire originated in the rear
part of Capt. Floyd’s store. The
latter is confident thst the burning
was the act ot as incendiary, and
that the proximity to tne jail was
the cause of the troobie. He say*

He gave the alarm promptly, and

Mr. Hewitt had between twenty
and thirty head ot horses aud mates

of his loss.
The inmates ot tbe jail twenty iu
number, two of whom aie charged
with murder, became terribly
alarmed aa the flames approach,

charge of three deputies they were
marched to the guard house and
securely stowed away. Tbe build
ings south of the the jail were well
saturated with water, and tbe
spread ot tbe fire on that side was
Ibns prevented. Nothing but the
grim walls of tbe structure were
left standing. Having been built
in Bepoblicao times it cost the
County ten tnousaud dollars, but
as most ot the bricks are unhurt, it
is thought the amount of insurance
ou it, $2,560, will cover all the loss.

During the fire there were some
eigut or nine hundred bates of cot
ton scattered about on the fequare,

caught. Too much praise cannot
be given the fire company ; their

Exhibition and pris* drills by

a squad of young girls, were among
the attractions. The Uniform* of
