SPECIOUS ARGUMENTS.
Thf people of Florence and West
Marion are again fnl! of ibetr an-
Dual “New Count ” project, and
are out Ix-fore the Legislature with
another long memorial, accompani
ed by a new Bi'l, maps, statistic*,
Ic., which have (a eu collected since
the lu-t stsaicu, wli< n i licit scheme
was so everwhelmiogly defeated.
The chief redeeming feafute about
this memorial ia tbar, iu most in
stances, its signer* are repre.'eitia-
live citizen of Marion and the town
and vicinity of Florence ; the great
wonder being that so many good
signature* c»uld have l>et-u obtain
ed to so peculiar a document. The
only explanation we can give of tbe
matter is that most of these gentle
men were either iguotaiitof tbe
con euts of the at tide which
they were signing, or lacked a fa
miliarity with certain facts which
they are supposed to know. An
extended discussion ot this remark
able paper would seem to tie un
necessary at this time, tor from
present appearances those opposed
to the scheme are not going to
be caught uapping as they were
during the early part of last sea
sion. Notwithstanding the fact,
therefore, that Florence has a large
band of lobbyist* again on the
scene in Columbia, (carried there a
second time, doubtless, by the rails
road authorities free of charge,) our
representatives now have their
facts prepared iu snob a way that
the “New County” will in all
probability be “nipped in tbe bud”
tbi* time before it has had the op
portunity of passing either House.
Wc cannot refrain, however, from
quoting the following sentences
verbatim from tbe remarkable me
morial above mentioned, and they
are given to oar readers without
comment, as statements which
speak for themselves with no un
certain sound: “Florence com
mands not only much ot tbe trade
of West Marion, hot also of Dar
lington, North Williamsburg and
North Claieudon Counties. . . The
people iu the Comity who are near
er to Florence than Darlington
also object to the latter as a county
sear, while those living equally
near to both generally prefer Flors
euce, aud do not object, at any rate
with tew exceptions, to the change.
. . . Tbe chief opposition radiates
trout Darlington Court Hou.*e,
where tbe merchants lawyers, brok
ers, bankers aud capitalists Lei a
natural rivalry towards their glow
ing sister town!” Are these state*
meats correct f
The memorial opens with the
customary statement of tbe incon
venieitces to which the people of
West Marion hnve been subjected
for the last hundred years, and clo
ses with the usual modest proposi
tiou that their grievances be re
dressed at the cost of mutilating
one of the best Counties in 'he
State, and inflicting a far worse in
jury upon it than is now suffered
by tbe people whom it is sought to
relieve. The document says that
•*A majority of the people of West
Marion woo'd regard it as a rebel
to have West Marion added on to
Darlington County, m tbe town ot
Darlington is far more accessible
and preferable as a capital to West
Marion than Marion Court House.”
Tbe memotisl might also have ad
ded with truth that there are some
iu West Marion who would prefer
Darlii'glou to Florence as their
Court House. Add to this num
ber those of We.>t Marion who are
opposed to a change of any kiud,
and those who are totally iudtf
fereut in regatd to the matter, and
we would iu all probability find
that the names of the West Marion
people deeply uiUiested iu the
Florence Court Uoa«e scheme were
well nigh exhausted by the signa
tures to the Legislative petition.
Again, this reuiaikabie paper
states that “Four members ot tbe
Darlington Bar are resident iu
Florence, and several others are ou
tbe point or moving there.” Wbat

however, lost in th** Senate.

stated, we tear that the intention is
to create the impression that all of
these “white men” who signed weie
in favor of the “New County ;” if

Not so with Darlington Comity,
howevei ; our people do not appre
ciate the tact that Florence is suf
fering from any anuecessary bur-
dev, except, iterhaps, that ot not
having a Coart House of its own ;
and notwithstanding the assertion
of the memorialists that they are
subjec ed to each untold hardships
in visiting a Court House situated
ten miles from them on the rail
road, (two trains a day running each
way between tbe two points,) our
peo; Ie were so blind to the real cr
imaginary grievances of poor Flur
euce, that they overwhelmingly
defeated the scheine by their votes
at the recent primary election. Mr.
Kershaw, the candidate on the
“New County’’ issne, “one of the
very best meu in the County,) who
by his fine address and manly per
sonal qualities won for himself a
host of friends in every section dar
iug the eampsign, the s'rongest
nominee whom the opposition could
have pm up, received only 917
votes to Mr. Netties’ 1262. A great
n any of these votes were gained
hy tbe popularity of the man, and
were cast by those actual y hostile
to Mr. Kershaw’* pet schema. A

is the nse of the ballot after all f
The elective franchise is simply for
tbe par|M>se ot determining which
of two parties or tactions is the
stronger, and in this instance, sues
cess was with those opposed to the
“New County.”
The old argument is used that
there is no objection to both Dar
lington aud Florence being couuty
seats, because Charleston and
Mount Pleasant each enjoy that
distinction, the enthusiastic ad
vocates of the “New County” meas
ure thinking it practicable by sneh
arguments to blind the Legislature
to the difference between a cou-
ficial, and the L-gislature will un
doubtedly so legaid tht-m, refusing
to run tbe new boundaries until
the question as to whether all ot
the counties will have the con
stitutional territory has t een ju
dicially det< rmined. We have not
yet had access to the new map
wbiihbas been prepared by the
advocates o( the movement, but we
understand that, while some
changes have been made in the pro
posed liue which is to split Dar
lington County, more of our terri
tory is asked lor than ever betuie,
another reason why our people
should fight this scheme to tbe
bitter end before allowing it to be
consummated.
But why at tempt to refute fur
