Courier: In rtferenee to the recent
personal eucoanter between Mr. H.
ft. Thomas and myself, I beg to
submit a brief statement.
It is true that being provoked by
bis insults, I assaulted him.
It is true that I struck him sev-
eral blows with my fist, and con
tinued to strike until the bystaud

after we were separated, I picked

At the appointed time the wai
ters brought in the crows, which
had been roasted, and in all re
spects nicely prepared. Amid a
continued roar of laughter on the
part ot the Republicans and their
friends who had gathered to see
tbe lun, the victims ate with a
good grace their meal. In the
