This storjr deals with a Missourian who
"nilsd” westward in a “prairie schooner,’’ in
the earlier dajt—accotnpaniod by bis wife, a
baby girl, and his outfit—encountered In
dians, priration and suffering, and during the
Journey lost bis wife by ferer. He worked
his way westward, and our story finds him
established In Han Francisco, keeping a lodg
ing house hi the hull of a deserted vessel,

gold seeking crew, and subsequently sur
rounded by drifting sand and refuse, until
ws find her stem facing one of Han Fran
cisco’s streets, the decks being partitioned off
for the accommodation of the various room
ers.
The baby girl of former years—Rosey—
assists in Dm management of the queer estab
lishment, and two of the tenants figure con
spicuously In the narrative.
The owner of tbo craft, Mr. Abner Nott, Is
a queer mixture of gullibility, ridiculous in
nocence and persistent and ludicrous misap
prehension; but be Is wiser than he looks, and
takes in a Han Francisco real estate sharp,
who connives to defraud him of the treasure
supposed to be secreted in the hold of the
“Pontiac," In a manner designed to “point a
moral," as it certainly “adorns the tale.”
Tbs sharper engages a young man to dis
cover the treasure, but the young fellow
repents, fells in love with Rosey and nobody
is "left” but the would be robber.
