LOCAL POLITICIANS.
Vie have said that a Primary a'-
ways has a wholesome effect upon
tbs defeated candidate, in as muck

against tbe vedict of “the dear peo
ple” themselves; but this phase of
the subject requires a more ex:en d
ed consideration than we have yet
given it. Iu almost every com
munity there is a prominent tigarc,
who is so well known to us all that
it is almost unnecessary to desciibe
him. A man of somewhat belter
ta'ents aod opportunites than bia
neighbors, he it is who ha* the
most to say when they are callt d
together in club meetings. With
out the walls of the sanctuaty
on Sunday morning, before preach
ing begins, he holds iu w rapt at
tention his group of admirers, wtitle
he relates to them tbe latest politi
cal news of tho day, aud acquants
them with the iutrigues which are
trauspiring iu the more thickly
populated centres. Taken all iu all,
such a man often basin him the ele
meats of tbe highest citizenship, but
they hare never been nmuilested by
reason of tbe disappointments
which have attended his political
career, aud the causes to which he
attributes them. In these conclus
ions be is always endorsed by his
respectable following of local ad
mirers, who, year alter year, when
their chief comes homo from the

before them, and can judge of its
merits for themselves.

At the request ot I) It. Trailer,
1 state that 1 was solely respousi
ble for excepting Darlington Coun
ty from the provisions of the Act ot
the las Legislature extending the
time for the collection of taxes 1
did it because ex'endiug time when
there is no special reason tor it
gets the people into the habit of
error ou tbe books, which my set
tlement sheets will show. 1 have
endeavored every year to correct it
as tar as 1 was able. For instance,
I tind a piece of property which is
duplicated some where else. 1 al-
wa\* mark opposite that name on
my tax book the error, aud it is the
Auditor’s business before making
up his new book to take notice of
these things and stiike them out.
But it never has been done nntil
this year, aud 1 think to a great
extent this trouble will be less iu
the future. Now this continued
negligence from ye^r to year by
the Auditor's accounts for such a
large amount of worthless tax ex
ecutions, aud the censure which
is unjustly cast upon me aud ot
which I am as inuoccnt as a child
unborn. All 1 ask is that the tax
books be made out correctly aud
the tax records will be parallel with
the good name of old Darlington.
But if otherwise I ask that the
blame fall where it belongs. While
none can claim perfection iu this
world give me justice for tryiug to
straighten this matter “if the heav

P. M. A caucus of the Farmers’
Movement men was held here
to-day in Traxlet’s Hail. The gath
ering numbered from forty to fifty,
about fourteen townships being rep
resented, among which were Swift
Creek, Lydia, Stokes’ Bridge,
ijaiiar, Caitersville, Eflin^bam,
liot-nezer, Timmousvilb, aud Flor
ence. Mr. J. W. Beasley presided,
Dr. J. O. Byrd acting as receiving
offi -er. Nothing of political conse
quence is believed lo have been
(tone. Only members of the Exe-
cnlive Committee of the County
Farmers’ Association aud some ot
the candidates were admitted to
the caucus, aud the rest of the
members of the Association lie tug
excluded complain tuat the Exe
cutive Committee is not a represen
tative body.
These dissatisfied paities face
tiously style themselves “The Lower
House.” They let out some things,
alleging that the Committee is
picket!; that the Farmers’ Associa
tion will be defunct by the fall, and
that the o d Tillman Movement is
now merged into the Farmers’ Alii
auce. They say that the melting
is not legitimate,aud lhat therefore
it is rather a ring affair; lhat it was
called without any if the members
