THE DARLINGTON NEWS. THURSDAY, MAKOIJ 15, 1888. * ; HF..\HI T. Be was aucoeeded by bia •on, Frederick William, who in him •elf far on the road to the grave- For aome time paat bo baa been ■offering from an maidioiucancer in his throat and haa been unable to otter a word. Frederick William married a daughter of Victoria* Queen of England, and on bis death, which cannot be far distant, be will ba ittcceedrd by bia aan, the present German Grown Prince, who is a grandson of Queen Victoria. Under aH the circumstances the, death! of the old Ka ser is particu Imply aad, and by it one of the great lights of this century has gone out. To him belongs (be honor of having unified all the petty Gemma Stutes thereby forming one of the grnudest nations which the world has ever seen. He was the idol of the Ger man people, land right well did tie merit their homage. One of the greatest rulers and most dia'iug- oisbed soldiers of the age, hin pri- vatejife was marked by that cor rectness of deportment which ia the characteristic of the Christian gen tleman, and by a simpliei y in bia mode of living which amounted al* ■oat to austerity. The regret which he expressed iu his last illness that he should be the cause of so much trouble to the loved ones who were attending him, was truly pathetic, sod showed the real n (tore of the treble, kind, and gonlle soul which was fast drifting townrde eternity. ▲ great ami good monarch is dead, and well may Germany, aye, and the whole civilized world, raise ita vales in lamentation. A SATISFACTORY SESSION Judge Hudson is a hard worker, a learned and ready lawyer, and a most capable presiding officer. Un der his management, assisted by our aacomplished Solicitor, not very many moments were lost during themant sitting of the Court, and tha heavy business of an important term was dispatched with a prompt nana and thoroughness which is rarely witnessed. Una fact which caused considertv- Me •onimenT was the large number of eouvictions secured fey the So licitor at this term. The (arora who served last week were, aa a body, far superior in point of Jndgment, intelligence and general merit to theeenirer ; usually sum- monad in other parts of the State. To the capability of this body is doe m no small) degree the success whiea attended the efforts of the Stake to admiuister justice and to me<e- out proper punishment to taauagresaorH of the law. Another fact to which attention should be called is the compara tively tr fling nature of tke ofiences charged against those who were brought to trie'. Of the fifteen con viotiona secured only one of ti e defendants was while, while of the eight rent over on Monday as ooovicta to the penitentiary, the longest sentence to be served was bat nine months. No case of mur der came up duri g the whole term, aod, in fact, only eue defendant was tried fbr a high crime, in which Instance the testimony was not suf fleient to secure a conviction. Near* ly all of the oases were trivial m>it tors of larceny committed by color ed people, or insignifleent assault aod battery cases, the- outgrowth ofdissentions among them. These flacta are all the more remarkable wbeo wexonaider that this was one oithe most important terms of the Coart of General Sessiona, the flrst wbieJbbas been held bereaiuoe last ffeli, aod<oae si which, iu most of the counties of the State, the cases are both numerous aod serious. Florence Facts and Fancies. (Cerrespoadeao* wf The Charleston Sun.) Some time ago some of the offi cials of the Palmetto Brewing Com pany were in our town looking for a site upon which to erect a branch of theii extensive Gharleston works. After looking over our town and seeing that a better place could nor be fouud iu tbc interior of ibe State from which todistiibate their gawds, they purchased a piece of laud ou Railroad avenue, and are now •.•clinga large ice bouse and bottling esiabbshuieut. Tin ice bouea, with i t s enormously thick walls, is nearly complete, aad the other buildings will soon be tiuished. They will cany , on a regular bottling basiuess here, and besides manufacture soda water and other summer beverages. We have had a visit from one of the agents ot the Pullman Gar Company, who, after riding over the town and examiuhig tiki loca tion of our town iu connection with the railroads, expressed himself a» being satihtled that this would make a good p'aee to locate a Southern branch of tbess great works. As the necessity of South ern branches at cm to be evident, and as Ibis p tint is veiy central, we are in hopes that b«>'ite long we may have one of them here. There is little doubt that the day ia not far distant when we wiil have ru-tay manufacturing interests here. A more central apot from which to operate could not l*e found in the State, and if once some of these great industries start here others will follow in rapid succes sion. The budding boom- still goes on h-re. There b is not been a day for the past year when there li ire not been from ten lo flfeen dwell ings or stores in course of erection iu this town, it is the hardest kind of work to find a carpenter to do you a day’s work, as all are oc cupied on cot trac's. A Mr. Rob bin'', of i'etrrsfield, Georgetown Comity, moved here 'a-a week to engage in (be mercantile business and to get the benefit of the flue schools of this town. The outside world is certainly appreciating the fact that Florence is a good place to come to. Farming is being pnshed through out the country, anil large quanti ties ot ft-rtiliarrs ate being hauled out of of the depot. The farmers are well up with their w irk, and the flue ciops made last year, con pled with the go< d price obKiiued tor cotton, has given cont-ukrable impe-us to faimmg interests. The stockholders ot the Florence Building and L mu Association wet ou the 1st iust. and appointed a board of trustees to wind up tbe affairs of tbe association, whose charter expires ou 29th inat. This institat'on hat done much good in this town iu helping in,my to own homes that would o.lierwiae have been forced to pay rente. Tbe few remaining stockholders will get a fine interest ou tbeir nvestment. After this association is wound up we will stt 1 have two more, the Pee Dee BuiMlng and Loan As.«ociation and the Mechanics.
