Flinu.
The Hon. Geo. W. Dargan, left
Sunday for Washington, so as to he

A SLIGHT shock of earthquake
was felt here on last Thursday
morning about 8 o’clock. Slight
tremors have beeu felt in various
parts ot the State during the week.
Salesday, was quite a poor at
fair this mouth, owing to the in
clemency of the weather. O ily a
few people were in town, and but
one or two public sales were made.
The ameteurs are still rehears
ing their peice, ami when they pre
sent it, the people of Darlington
will have the opportunity of seeing
one of tbe finest ameteur pertorm
ances ever given in this town.
T. H. Spain and R G. Parnell,

Coroner respectively, for this coun
ty, having received their cominis-
sious from the Governor, assumed

Maj. J. B. Ezell, general aigmit
of the Springfield Fire & Marine
Insurance, Co., was in town this
week, looking to the payment of
$6.00 iusnrauce on tbe stock of Mr.
T. C. Jett'ords, recently destroyed
by fire. There w^ no insurance
on tbe building.
Mr. Geo. B. Howie, one of Dar
lington’s enterprising farmers, made
this year, eighty five gallons of mo
lasses, from a quarter acre crop .of.
cane. The sample brought to our
office, was splendid, several persons
to whom it was shown thougUt it
was New Orleans syrup.
Mrs. J N. Garner met with quite
a painful accident on last Monday.
While walking in the yard, she fell
on the ice, and broke one of the
bones in her arm and dislocated
her wrist. Mrs. Garner is getting
better though she has suflered a
great deal from the wound.
The municipal election will be

On Wednesday morning Decern
ber 1, 1886, Hannah, the little ten
year old daughter ol Mr John W.
Harrington, ot Hartsvide, was run
ning iu the yard with a pair ot scis
sors in her baud, when tailing acei
dently over a wheel barrow, the
scissors entered her abdomen and
broke against the vertebra. Tbe
portion of the scissors which re
mained in her body was broken in
two parts, only one of which i he
doctor succeeded in abstracting.
The poor little snfterer lingered iu
intense agony until two o’clock on
Saturday night. The funeral ser
vices were be d at the Presbyterian
Church here at 2 P M. tu Wednes
day. They were to have beeu held
at the same hour ou the day pre
vious, but the roads were rendered
so impassable by reason of the
number of trees which had fallen
across them since tbe freeze that it
was found Impossible to bring the
remains to town. It would be im
possible to express the heartfelt
sympathy throughout tbe commu
nity fur Mr. and Mrs. Harrington
who have met with so terrible a be
reavement.
Oar State Senator Interviewed.
As the Senate wae not in session
on Saturday, Monday or Tuesday,
Col. Edwards came over to spend
the time with his family, and the
Editor ot the News took advau
tage of his presence iu town to have
achat with him ou the*more impor
tant issoea now pending before the
. Legislature. Col. Edwards thinks
‘ that, while tbe vote will be close iu
the Senate, tree tuition in the South
Carolina College is virtually dead.
He a so thinks thata law eatabliah-
ing a separate Agricultural College
of some kiad will be enacted in tbe
near future, and be is in favor of
Senator Woodward’s idea, with
some modification, of placing a
State tax on dogs.
Our Senator believes that the
time has come for the calling of a
Consutiitienal Convention, and that
a bill will pasa the Legislature to
thateftect. The bill to ab oish the
salary of 11,000, now received by
the Licutei ant Governor has p>ss
ed the House, has beeu unanimous
ly recommended by the Judicary
Committee of the Senate, ami Col".
Edwards thinks i‘ will inevitably
become a law, though, of course, it
will uot take effect until the expir
atiou of the term of the pteseut iu
cumbent. The movement to torni
a new county from portions ot the
cotmriesnf Chesterfield, Darlington,
Kershaw and Sumter with the
county-seat at Uishopville, will not
prevail The Florence county pro
IHtsition is still being urged.
Under the law therdare two Trial
Justices allowed for the town* ol
Darlington. Petitions tor the re
appointment of the iucumbei ts,
Messrs. H. E. P. Sanders and C. P.
Dargan have already been forward
ed to the delegation. It is said
that a petition praying the appoint
ment of Mr. W. II. Lawrence will
also be forwarded in a few days.
Senator Edwards returned to Co
lumbia on Tuesday afternoon.

Funeral of Mrs; Minnie Lawrenee
Drown.
(From tbe Turkalooea Tim ».}
On Saturday afternoon, Nov. 20
1886, Mrs. Minnie Lawrence Brown
was buried at Evers.reei Cemetery
iu this city. The impressive-funer
al services were cam noted at the
Baptist Church, by the Reverends
Messrs. Dill and Monk
This simple announcement will
shock many ot the friends of the
subject of this notice, for this is a
loss that was entirely unexpected.
The death occurred at Atlanta, Ga.,
w here she was being treated for an
affection of the throat. A lane
concourse of our people assembled
at the church to pay the last sad
rites to the deceased. The coffin
and grave were almost hidden un
der the many flowers gathered by
loving fingers.
A large list of friends mourn her
loss,—a list which was begun in
childhood,—continued during the
•lays of the maiden’s life,—and so
increased, by the time that w oman
hood’s years were readied, that i*
numbered almost all our people.
The reason for this w ts, that she
was one of the most stately s.nd
beautiful ot the creatures of our
Maker, and not less lovely was her
character. She was noted.for her
kind and tender disposition, and
her firm and steadfast devotion to
her friends. Nature had endowed
her with a magnificent voice, which
was regularly used iu her Maker’s
worship while she was a resident ot
the city.
This loss falls upon all—but chief
ly upon a di voted husband, loving
mother, a. d two brothers with
whom we deeply sympathize in their
great affliction.
