quake shock on Sunday afternoon
last about 3.30. Summerville bad
two on the same day.

Mr E. M Williamson, living
Bear Dovesville, lost his carriage
house and its contents by fire on
Saturday night last. The fire is
thought to have caught from match
as left in the buggy.
On the night ol Tuesday, Nov.
30th, a negro named Caesar Robin
son was lynched at Florence. lie
is said to have committed a violent
assault, with criminal inttnt, upon
ayonug lady near the town At
the time of going to press no far
ther particulars could be ascertain

On Sunday morning last. Mr. W.
J. Lockhart of Timmousville, found
on his door-step a basket with a
nicely dressed infant, carefully
wrapped np, in it. The child was
bat s day or two old, and is sup
posed to have been left there by
•one one passing through the town
on one of the night trains.

generally observed in Town. Most
of the places of bosiueas closing,
either the entire or a portion of the

The friends of Mr. II. E. P San
ders, the efficient Trial Justice at
this place, having understood that
there would be some opposition to
his reappointment tave forwarded
to the Governor a petition, signed
by the members of the bar and
other citizens of the town and
vicinity, requesting that Mr. San
ders retain his office We under
stand that Mr. W. U. Lawrence is
Mr. Sanders’ opponent.
On Monday night, the 22ml of
November, between twelve, and one
o’clock the store of Mr. T. 0. Jef
fords, Jr , near Palmetto, was dis
covered to be ou fire. Mr. Jeffords
was awakened from his sleep by
the popping of fire crackers, and
went at once to the store, but was
too late to save anything, as the
fire had made too great a headway
before it was discovered. He saw,
however, that the front door had
been forced ojien. This circnm
stance, together with the fact that
no tire had been in the store during
the day, leaves no doubt but that
the fire was incendiary. Mr. Jef
fords had his stock it sured for
8500.
Monday ni»ht last some one
broke into the dwelling of Mr. Wm.
Hawkins, living near Dovesville
and stole about 811 from the pock
et of his pants. Mr. G- W McLeod,
son-in-law ol Mr. Hawkins,suspect
ing a negro named Colonel Mcln
tyre, better known in the neighbor
hood as “Cot. Mac,” went to his
bouse and finding that be had “skip
ped,” had a warrant issured and
instituted search which resulted in
the capture of the “Col,” Tuesday
afternoon, ou the track of the 0. &
D. R. K., about a mile from Black
Creek trestle. Mr. McLeod brought
his prisoner to town and lodged
him in jail, about twelve o’clock
Tuesday night. Some of the money
was recovered.
The case of Huffier Bros, appel
lants vs. Leopold Phillips, survivor,
et. al., respondents, Messrs. Boyd,
Nettles k Brunson, Ward & Nettles.
Dargau k McNeill, Dargan k Dar
gau, representing the appellants,
and Mr. Nathans for the defend
ants, was heard in the Supreme
Court on the 23rd instant. Messrs.
R. W. Boyd and G. S. Nettles made
the arguments for the appellants.
On the 23rd and 24th the case ol
Thos. J. Walker, respondent, vs.
W. C., & A. R. R., appe'Jants, was
argued, Messrs. Boyd& Nettles and
Geo. W. Brown for the respondent,
and Messrs. Riou & Barron, E. K.
Dargan k Son and J. 1*. McNeill for
the appellants. The argument for
the respondent was ’made by Mr.
Boyd. Neither ot these cases has
yet been decided.
DOVESVILLE.
—The health of our Town and
neighborhood is good.
— It is reported that a change ol
schedule will soon take place on the
C. k D. Railroad. No particulars
as }et.
—We hope the railroad bosses
will heed the demands o! tiie people
and give us ou the C.& D. railroad
line a day train to the Capital.
— Dovesville real estate seems to
be in demand, Dr. J. W. William
son has purchased the McCallmau
place and Mr J. C Dove ha- pur
chalted the Reid property.
—The work ot the members of
the Legislature from tins county
w ill be watched with an eagleVe.ie,
and we hope that they will make
for themselves an houoiable record.
—The Knights ot Labor appear
to be carrying their influence to
other places besides the towns and
cities. We learn that eoloied la
borers will demand, for another
season. 812.50 per month cash, with
rations, tor simple farm work. It
will be a blessing for them if they
can command their rations, in onr
opinion.
