Mr. J. Harry Nor meat, has re

Mr. John A. Brunson of D ir-
lington, now at Forman University,
in Greenville, S. C., has been re
cently ordained to tbe gospel miu

The Sixth Circuit was tbe first
one called in the State Supreme
Court when it met this week, and
several Darlington lawyers went to
Colombia to argue oases before it.
W. L King, having been elected
a member of the House of Repre
sentatives has tendered to the
Governor bis resignation as a Trial
Justice for Darlington County.
Mason, the enterprising jeweler,
has put up a handsome clock in
front of his store which will always
show the correct standard time

Z. T. Kershaw, Esq., Trial Jus
tice at Florence, has resigned in
order that he may quality as a mem
ber of tbe Legislature. Messrs. G.
McD. Stoll and J. E. Pettigrew are
applicants for the office.
We have received an# read with
pleasure a copy of “The Gynetro-
pbiau Record,” published by tbe
young ladies of Chester Female In
stitute, Chester, Virginia. Among
tbe members of the Gynetrophian
Literary Society is the name of
Miss Sae Wright, of Darlington
County.
The Sheriff committed to jail last
week Albert Johnson and Tim Gib
son, both colored, charged with
breaking into Sternberger’s store at
nig^t, and carrying oft goods. It
is supposed that these depredations
have been going on quietly for over
two mouths. Some of tbe plunder
was found in tbe possession of both
the parties.
A COMPETITIVE drill of the Flor
enee Rifles for two handsome gold
medals, that had been offered to
the best and second best drilled
man in the company, took place at
their Armory in Florence, on Mon
day night last. For want of space
in this week’s issue, we will have to
postpone a fuller report of this en
joyable entertainment until next
week.
Mrs. A J. Harris, has recently
moved to onr town, and opened
a private boarding bouse, on Ex
change St., opposite McCullough &
BlackwelPs livery stables. Parties
wishing board, by the month or
day; or fast a single meal, would
4o well to give Mrs. Harris a call,
for they will find that she keeps a
first-class bouse in every respect.

ed and grieved on Friday last by
tbe news of tbe death, in Atlanta,
Ga., of Mrs. Geo. W. Brown. Mr.
Brown received s telegram on Wed
nesday summoning him to Atlanta,
but neither be nor bis frieads bad
any anticipation of the sad resalt
Tbe people of Darlington, among
whom tbe whole of Mrs. Brown’s
married life was spent, are mnch
saddened by her untimely death.

nesday, last arguments were being
heard tor a new trial in tbe case
of Raley, vs Segars. A new trial
was granted, unless the defendant
paid the plaintiff $9. The money
was paid and the case ended.

The Legislature.
The Legislature was convened in
the Agricultural Hall at 12 o’clock
on Tuesday tbe 23d inst., the Sena
tor and all the members frem Dar
lington being present when the roll
was called. Tbe Hon. James Sim
ons, of Charleston, and Dr Pope,
of Newberry, were the candidates
for Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives; the former was elected
by a vote of 107 to II. Col. John
T. Sloan of Richland was elected
Clerk of tbe House, and Col. H. A.
Gaillard of Fairfield Clerk of the
Senate. The present General As
sembly, by the prompt manner in
which it began work showed itself
to be a business like body. Gover
nor Richardson will be inaugurated
about Dec 1. The Darlington
News will contain each week a full
outline of tbe proceedings.
<^The County of Florence
In pursuance to a call a large ami
enthusiastic mass meeting ot the
citizens of Florence and the vicinity
was held at Allen's Hall on last
Friday night, for tbe purpose of
discussing tbe subject ot iorming a
uew Couuty with Florence as the
county seat. It was decided to pre
sent tbe following memorial to the
Legislature at its approaching ses
sion :
To the Honorable, The Senate and
House o/ Rqtresentatires, in Gen
eral Assembly Convened :
We. the citizens of the southern
part of Darlington county, and that
part of Marion couuty west ot the
Great Pee Dee River, respectlully
(Demoralize aud petitiou the Gtner-
al Assembly to create aud estab
lish a uew Couuty, embracing (he
requisite area to be taken'from ti c
couuties above named, to be desig
nated the County of Florence, w ith
the towu of Florence as its Couuty
Seat, as the locatiou of such a coun
ty would be to the manifest advan
tage, convenience and saving of ex
peuse of the people residing within
the limits of the territory meutiou
ed.”
The town of Florence has agreed
to furnish a Ccurt House and jail if
the uew county is created. The
subject is the all-absorbing topic of
conversation in the town aud seems
have awakened general interest
