the State Fair was the smiling, hap
py face of Capr. T. C. Poore, who,
with his bride, was on a visit to

The Town Council are boring a
pipe well forty feet deep, on the
sorth side of the square, and Dr.
Willcox is having a similar one bor
ed back of his store.
D. E. Hydbick, Esq., formerly
principal of St. John’s Academy at
this place, has formed a co-partner
ship for the practice of law with
Cspt. J. W. Carlisle, of Spartan
burg.
Mb. B. K. Rrookinton who re
ceutly moved from this county to
Texas, returned last week to look
after some of bis business here. He
gives a glowing account of the pros
perity ot bis adopted State.
When you contemplate sending

the recent State Fair.

The infant child of Rev tuul Mrs.
E. T. Hodges died on Monday and
was buried ot t he Methodist grave
yard in Darlington on the following
morning. The sorrowing parents
have the heartfelt sympathy of the
community in their bereavement.
The managers of the State and
oounty elections are requested to
baud in to Mr. J. Gregg McCall
without further delay all accounts
they may have against the commis
sioners for ex|>enses incurred in
conducting the election.
In the premium list of the Comi
ty Fair es published in the News,
it was made to appear that the
premium tor the best native cow
was takea by Mr. C. S. McCullough,
when, in point of fact, it was won
by Mr. J. B. Bmcb, ot Palmetto.

The Rev. Mr. Moore, of Darling
ton, filled the Baptist pulpit yester

with the earnestness of the gentle

At the first annual convention
of the third and fourth class post
masters, of Sontb Carolina, which
was held iu Columbia on the lltb,
inst, Mr. W. O Rose, Postmaster
. at Timmonsville, was elected one of
the Vice-Presidents. |
Mb. W. R Barringer, who has
charge of the Central Hotel in Flor
ence, does everything in his power
for the accommodation of bis guests
and those who travel by private
conveyances are not charged for
stable room if they stop at bis
bouse.
The Fourth Quarterly Confer
ence ot the M. E. Church, Sontb,
for this station, will be held at the
Methodist Cbnrch next Saturday
and Sunday, Rev. W. C. Power, P.
E., preaiding. The Presbyterians
have been invited to commnne with
with the Methodist on Sunday.

of Rev. John G. Law, the pastor of
the Presbyterian Church, seven
persoas were baptised on Sunday
last, and eighteen have been re
ceived into the church since the last
comma nion.

The last aunual report of the
& mmissioner of Pensions shows
that there are seven persons in
Darlington County who draw pen
sions from the Government, ol
whom one invalid draws $24, one
widow $12, two survivors of the
war of 1812, $8 each, three widows
of soldiers who fought in that war
$12 each, making a total of $88 per
annum drawn iu the county.
A very sad accident in the Lydia
section on Saturday. A yonng son
of Mr. J. H. Hicks, only 13 years
old, was carelessly handling a load
ed pistol, when it was accidentally
discharged, the ball taking effect iu
the forehead of little Jeff, the six-
year old sou of Mr. J. Boyd With
erspoon, killing him instantly. The
sympathies of all their friends have
been deeply aroused for the two
families affected by the unfortunate
accurrance. Mr. Witherspoon’s lit
tle son was hurried on Sunday.
Thursday, Nov. 25th, having
been appointed by the President
and the Governor of the State as
Thanksgiving day, will be generally
observed as a holiday in Darling
ton. The Bank, Post office aud all
other public places of business will
be closed. Services will be held in
the Presbyterian Church at 11
o’clock in the morning, at which a
col'ection will be taken up for the
benefit of the Thorn well Orphanage.
It is hoped that the merchants, as
they did last year, will close their
stores and give their hard-working
employees a day of rest.
Episcopal services were held in
the Methodist Oburcb on Tuesday
and Wednesday nights by the Rev.
John Kershaw, of Sumter, and Holy
Communion was administered alter
the services on Wednesday. The
music was excellent; the voices
were good, and the choir gave evi
dences of having trained themselves
for the occasion. The grand old
anthems, as »bey pealed forth, im
pressed every hearer. The congre
gation was charmed with Mr. Ker
shaw ; his clear, straight-forward
manner of patting biblical truths
chained the attention of all ins
bearers. The Episcopalians in Dar
lington would be delighted if, iu
some way, it could be arranged to
secure a portiuu of Mr. Kershaw's
tune after the new chapel is built.
WARDSVILLE.
—The Wardsville Iree school was
opened on Monday, the 8th mst.,
with Mr. Stepheu A. Morris as
teacher.
—Our Wardsville merchants are
paying more tor farm products than
the Timmousville merchants and
sell their goods as cheap.
—Messrs. John M. P. Kerby,
Irvin Purvis ami Gideon Rivil will
leave soou for the Darlingtou Fac
tory. They all have lar£e families
aud will be missed a greit deal.
—Times are very dull and dry in
this locality. We are visited fre-
queutly by the Irish peddlers wl o
say they find hard times where ever
they go They say there is no
money in circulation, and they are
ab mt right.
—Two of our yonng men are
keeping batchelors hall together
We would like to know what the
youug ladies are doing to allow
such a thing. The youug men say
they can’t help themselves as it
takes two to make a bargain
—The Peniel Baptist Church had
a revival meeting which lasted a
week. It began on the otb Sunday
in October, aud was conducted by
Rev. I. A. Evans, and the pastor.
The result of this meeting was very
good Eighteen candidates were
baptized on last Sunday morning at
Garner’s Mill.

Mr. George N. Warner, a native
of Rhode Iblaud, who has been
residing in this County for some
time as foreman of the slasher-room
at the Factory, died on Thursday
night of typhoid fever, aud wan
bailed the next day in the Baptist
grave-yard. Mr. Warner was quite
a young man, and bad been married
to a lady oi Darlington only a year

death was a sad one and has cast
