William A. Edwards and Harry A.
Brunson Our representative at
the Citadel are Homer A. DeLorme,
Robert L. Dargan, Thos. B. Hayns-
worth, Lawrence Y. King and
Claude E. King. It ia a remarka
ble fact that the Darlington boys,
in almost every instance, have done
the greatest credit to themselves
and their county at both of these
institutions since their re-opening.
Ail who are acquainted with the
two delegations which we have sent
this year will agree that they are
composed of such material as to in
duce the belief that they will main-
taiu that high standard of scholar
ship which was attained by their
predecessors. In all sincerity it may
be said that Darlington has reason
to be prond of her College and Cit
adel boys.
Me. A. W. Sexton, of Dovesville,
on tbe 22nd of January, 1886, beard
someone in his chicken coop, which
is quite near his boose, iu the mid
dle of the night. Mr. Sexton went
ont with his pistol to see what tbe
trouble was when a scuffle ensued
between bim and tbe mid-night
marauder, who turned out to be a
negro named Lawson Wright.
Wright succeeded in getting Mr.
Sexton’s pistol from him, and then
made his escape. Ever since that
time Sheriff Cole has been on the
look out for Wright, but met with
no success, until last week, where
he located bim in tbe Brownsville
section of Marlboro’ County- A
warrant was at once sent to Sheriff
Rogers, who arrested tbe fugitive
and sent him to Darlington, where
be was securely placed in jail to
await tbe verdict of a jury of bis
covstry who will pass upon bis ossa
at tbe Court of General sessions
next week. Wright is an old hand,
be having already served a year in
the Penitentiary for assault and
battery with intent to kill.

TIMMOXSVILLE.
—Our streets are croudetl with
people, ami trade is brisk.
—It is very dry and dusty, and
bilious fever is very prevalent.
—Cotton still comas iu freely ami
onr buyers pay tbs highest prices
for tbe staple. The shipmeut last
week amounted to 1,600 bales.
—The ticket as a whole is well
received in this section and will be
supported throughout all good
Democrats will govern themselves
accordingly.
—I*t thou who got defeated iu
the convention try it two years
hence on tbe primary election plan,
and I believe many of them will
meet with better luck.
—Tbe people about here congrat
ulate them selves on the nomination
of their fellow townsmau, Dr. J. O.
Byrd tor the Legislature and pro
diet that Dr. Byrd will make bis
mark in tbe House as his uncle Dr.
8. D M. Byrd, of Williamsburg has
done in the Senate for a number of
years. Dr. Byrd is au educated
gentleman, and is well versed in
political economy and in parliamen
tary law.
—As we have cat s good honest
ticket, most of them farmers and
working men, why do not onr col
ored friends become harmonised and
vote with us 1 J. E. B.
EBENEZER.
—Water courses are drying np
very fast—we almost breathe dnst
—The bridges at Middle Swamp
and Jeffries are getting in Edge-
field order, and need a few planks.
—Tobacco growers so far are
highly pleased with their efforts in
that direction. If sales are good
they will plant again.
—The farmers are despondent
over their short crops. Tbe exoep
tion is rare where the income will
balance tbe expenditure. Legis
lation, farmers conventions, amend
ments to the constitution, knights
of labor, all combinded cannot bring
relief with rations nearly oot and
possums very small and scarce.
—The ooDvention made a ten
strike when J. E. Ward waa nomi
nated for County Commissioner.
He stands highest of any man in
this fowuahip (close on to seven-
feet) Ebenezer is content and the
comity will have in him the services
of one of her citizens who is tbe
soul of honor with all tbe patriotism
of s Ciucinatus.
—Whether the long catalogue of
grievances complained of by tbe
people are real or imaginary, we
doot propone to discuss, but since
tbe convention has met sod finished
its great work whether good or bad
the future alone can determine, we
are more than ever convinced that
above all things else our politics
need reforming, tbe many tricks re
torted to by jealous friends of as
pirants office to force men to act
against their better judgment is
humiliating in tbe extreme to thoee
who feel an honeet pride in beiog
tailed worthy none of onr gallant,
grand and glorious Palmetto State,
v* ben tbe people are in earnest for
the soppressioo of any real evil fit
ness is the first and only qualifica
tion sought for in their leaders
which never fails to accomplish tbs
desired result.
