AN excursion, mentioned last
week, will be ran on Thursday
oext, Sept 16, from Wadesboro to
Charleston, returning on Friday
Passengers who prefer to do so can
sleep in the cars Thursday night.
Train will pass Darlington at 10
o’clock Thursday morning and re
turn abont 12 30 Friday night, giv
ing thirty hoars in the city.
The whistle at the Factory on
Wednesday morning of last week,
was an evidence that the Mill bad
not been damaged. The operatives,
like every one else in our town,
were frightened by the earthquake
of Tnesday night, bat when Mr.
Newman went to the Mill at an ear
ly hoar he found the engineer and
fireman at their posts waiting for
instructions. An examination of
the Mill showed that no damage
bad been done and when the ma
chinery was started three-funrths of
the operatives were at their posts.
This is a remarkable record and
shows that the Factory element in
onr town is composed of solid citi-
sens. We expect that the Factory
operatives and the News’ force
were the only ones in town who
did a full day’s work Wednesday of
last week.

—Mr. John Humphries was acci-
'dentally shot in the ankle recently

slightly hurt.

ened and all have not fully recov
ered from the fright yet.

not willing to give 50 cents per hun
dred, and maity of the pickers are
asking that figure.
LAMAR.
—Onr merchants are receiving
and opening their fall stocks.
—Interesting religions meetings
are carried on at Zion M. E. Cbarcb,
near this place.
• —Lamar, in common with other
sections, has been well shaken by
the recent earthquake.
—A farmer’s club was organized
at this place last Saturday after
noon looking solely to the interest
of agriculture.
—Mr. John E. Windham has a
nicely arranged fish pond. He ap
preciates it very mnch and valnes
it at $800. '
—Mr. G. W. Mims is remodeling
his dwelling. We expect George is
kseping one eye on bis cage and
the other on bis lark.
—We regret to chronicle the
death of Mrs Elipbaz Rogers.«Sbe
died of typhoid fever after an ill
ness of about three weeks, and
leaves a husband and one child and
a host ot relatives and friends to

—Mr. D. H. Trailer and family
have returned from Greenville
where they spent the heated term.
—Mr. McKnight organized a
farmers’ club at L:tmar a few days
ago. Go on farmers ami make your
selves a power in the land.
—Rev. Mr. Richardson, assisted
by the Rev. Mr. .Oliver, has been
carrying on a protracted meeting
at the Baptist Church for the last
week.
—Mr. B R. Tillman, of Hamburg,
will be one of the speakers at Tim
monsville, at the appraching Dem
ocratic meeting which is anticipa
ted about the last of this mouth.
—We all are getting over the
earthquake Shock, and like the time
the stars fell, when we were a boy,
the people will have something to
tell their children, till some other
remarkable event occnrs.
—Cotton is ooming in freely and
Mr. Richardson has arrived from
the North with plenty of money to
pay for the tfeecy staple. Mr. Me-
Sween has also got home from Scot
land and is baying cotton freely; it
is worth aboat 81 cents.
RIVERDALE.
—Those that rise early in the
morningcan hear the soundo< many
steam whistles in this comm unity.

—Mr. J. B. Stokes, of thi s place,
bas been quite sick, be having bad
a severe attack of fever. Bat hav
ing the best medical attention ad
ministered by that old, reliable
physician, Dr. Horace Williamson,
is again on the wing.
—Cotton is opening rapidly in
this section, and is picked ont
equally as fast at forty cents per
bandied, and yet leaving a number
ot hands unemployed, notwith
standing the farmers in and around
Riverdale have shown great sym
pathy to the colored people, owing
to the failure of the river lauds this
year, prominent among others, Mr.
J. W. Fountain, who gave them
various employments, some of which
was almost unnessary, at the same
time paying them reasonable and
living prices for their labor, for
there is a vast number of colored
people scattered along the borders
of the great Pi e Dee ]&iver. The
colored people siionld look with
pride and even hold sacred the
names of these gentlemen who are
ever ready to lend a helping hand
to the poor and needy.
—Mr. J. L. Edw’ards, one of the
largest and most successful farmers
of this community, has just pur
chased a fine stock ot goods to be
opened at the cross roads.

The offerings of this staple, owing
to the lateness of the season have
been light. We quote yesterday
middling at 8i to 8.15. Sales for
the week about 100 baks.
