The stockholders of the Darling
ton Manofhotuiiog Company will
bold their annual meeting at the
mill on Thursday, May 6, at 12
o’clock, noon.
Rev. Dr. Browne will deliver two
of bis lectures in the Opera Honse,
on Monday and Tuesday, May 3 and
4. He could not fill his appoint
ment as previously advertised, ow
ing to an accident.
Some animal had been depredat
ing on the chicken coop of Mr. S A.
Woods. He fixed poison in the
ocop, and found next day a dead
possum with eleven young in her
pocket.
AT the last meeting of the direc
tors of the Ejights Building Asso
ciation, a quarterly dividend of 3£
per cent was declared. This stock
Is at a premium, and it is the only
stock in town which pays divideuds
quarterly.
An improvement is being made
to the Methodist E. 0., South, which
will add to the looks of the interior
and give more space. A recess is
being added to the rear of the
church, 4 feet deep, to be arched,
with ornamental windows.
On last Saturday eveuing { the
17th instant, near Timmousville,
Mi. J. H. Ham while endeavoring
to secure some fire which bad got
ten out in a sedge field, had his
arms and ankle badly but not se
riously burnt.
The Grand Lodge, E. of H for
South Carolina, met in Georgetown
J esterday. From this lodge Dr.
. C Willcox was appointed dele
gate, with Mr H. Siernberger as
alternate. Mr. Sternberger is at
tending tbe session.
SUNDAY a strong east wind,
verging towards tbe north, in con
junction with the full moon, indi
cated a chance for frost, but as
there was uone, we can now pre
dict that ali danger is over and
tender plants, and the fruit left from
the last freeze will be safe.
THE health of the Factory opera
tives may be judged of by the tact
that out of a population of about
300, many of them children, there
has been but one death during the
year. The sickness has generally
been of mild diseases such as are
incident to every community.
The action of some unknown
parties in dropping poisoned food
in open places to kill stray dogs is
atill agitating our citizens who own
valuable dogs, and they speak of
organizing a club for the purpose
Ot detecting tbe perpetrators and
testing the legality of tbe act, at
(he first opportunity.
The Sunday school of the M. E.
Church, South, will celebrate Eas
ter, next Sunday afternoon at 4,
o’clock Tbe cbnrch will be appro
priately decofated. and tbe service
will consist ot a procession, emble
matic of tbe great truths of the
Christian religion, songs, etc. Tbe
public are invited to attend,
Mr. 0- Alexander, the courte
ous manager of tbe Enterprise Ice
House, has just received 40,000
of ioe which will be sold at 75 cents
per hundred pounds or one cent

Twenty of our white citizens
have combined to purchase a 20
•ere lot for a cemetery. The Town
Council have also decided to pur
chase a tract for a potters’ field, and

ting a tract also. The question of
location baa not yet been positively
decided, but will be at an early
date.

will contain altogether twenty-four
pages, including a double anppie-
ment and cover. Bill Nye and Nym
Crinkle begin their contributions
this week.
A petition, signed by every
business house, and most of our
citizens, has been sent on to Hon.
Geo. W Dargau, to present to the
Post Office Department, tor a
double daily mail on the route be
tween Florence and Cheraw. The
idea is to run a mail car in connec
tion with the freight. It will be a
mnch needed accommodation to
the business ot oar town and should
be established at once.
In another column see the pro
gramme of tbe Concert for next
Wednesday night, 28th instant. The
mnsical club has taken great inter
est and care in the selection and
arrangement ot the music, and as
appears from the programme, has
succeeded in preparing one which
will please all tastes. They have
fine mnsical help from abroad, and
it you want a mnsical treat, don’t
fail to hear them on that oocasiou.

—Corn that is np is growing
finely.
—Small grain crops are looking
well.
—Cotton planting is now the or
der of the day.
—Merchants and clerks can now
get their fishing tackle ready for
the summer campaign.
—The farmers’ movement is re
ceiving no attention from onr farm
ers. We will wait and see what
the convention does.
—Education is now receiving the
attention of onr people. We have
two fine schools in this place. This
is a step in the right direction.
Fathers desiring to prepare their
sona for college, will do well to
send them to this place.
WARDSVILLE.
—The Grange base ball club has
reorganized, and has made several
good plays.
—Miss Alice Oliver has returned
home after an absence of some
time.
—The Wardsville Farmers Clnb
will meet Saturday at 5 o’clock P.
M. to appoint a delegate to the
State convention.
—We are sorry to see no school
at Wardsville. And we are afraid
tbe interest of edocation has sub
sided somewhat
—The sound of tbe hammer and
saw is heard, and Mr. P. L. Gee
will soon be in his new house It
is rumored that he intends to take
her in.
—We are sorry to chronicle the
death of Mr. Morgan Oliver who
died od Thursday 15th inst Mr.
Oliver leaves a wife and four little
children. We tender our heartfelt
sympathies to his wife and children
and to his parents.
SWIFT CEEEK.
—Onr farmers are very busy
planting cotton.
—Mr. H. E. Jones b;is, in bis gar
den, a few rows of the finest sweet
l»ea plants we have seen any where
this spring.
—Capt. J E Bass has his saw-
mill in good running order and is
now ready for any bill that may be
presented to him. Bring them in.
—There was a meeting called at
the new school house last Friday,
for the purpose of organizing a
reading club. It is a nice thing;
especially lor the young folk. We
wish them success and a joyful
time.
— One of our farmers are going
to plant as mm b as fifteen acres in
tobacco this year. We hope he may
come oat successfully. If be does,
we think a good many of our enter
prising farmers will take hold next
year. Perhaps it would be better
to make a change any way, as peo
ple always like something new.
DOVESVILLE.
—The trees have put on their
green coats and everything looks
t-pring-like.
—The oat crop is showing itself,
but we cannot tell whether it will
be a success or not.
—The Council have done some
good work lately, by opening a
street fiom the academy to the rail
road. They could further show
some good werk by putting the
other streets in order.
—Rev. R. W. Lide, being called
to preach at some other chnrch on
Sunday, Mr. E. J. Forrester occu
pied the pulpit at Black Creek
Church in tbe evening, delivering a
fine discourse.
—Some of our farmers planted
cotton on or about the 1st instant,
and it is up, looking well. We see
in last week’s paper that “Lamar”
says it is too cool to plant cotton
out there. We would like to know
how much warmer he wants itT
—On Wednesday afternoon of
last week, about 3 o'clock, twenty-
two bales of cotton belonging to
Mr. J. I Gandy, stored under tbe
saw mill shed at his mother’s place
in Society Hill Township, was found
to be on fire by Mr. F. W Willi m-
sou, who was at work near by.
Every effort was made to get tbe
cotton oft and into a pond c f water
close by. Six bales were burnt up
together with the shed. Tbe re
mainder was more or less damaged,
with bagging destroyed. Mr. Gau
dy’s loss is at least tl,000.
A mother who starts out in tbe
