Don t fail to give Manne’s fresh, cool
and sparkling lager beer a trial. Only five
cents a glass. See advertisement.
Jt'noiNo from the number of fine turnouts
from the livery stable, Messrs. McCullough
& Houston have some fine stock on hand.
Maj. Charles is having put up a nice
new fence in front of his residence. It will
add much to the appearance of his already
pretty place.
The farmers of the county have been
blessed with copious rains, thus being secure
of a good oat crop, which, after ashort corn
crop of last year, is much needed.
According to notice the Treasurer’s
office is now open for the May installment of
taxes. Come in and pay while there is no
crowd to contend with. Don’t wait 'till the
last week.
The Darlington Lioiit Dragoons mus
tered over forty on last Saturday, all well
mounted and with bright sabres. We com
pliment them on their handsome appearance,
and hope we will always see them looking
as well.
The Darlington Brass Band volunteered
their Services last Srturday, to assisl in the
monumental ceremonies. The drummer of
the Band, Henry Brown, was with the 8th
Regiment, in Virginia, and is one of the
best drummers in the State.
Our new council would do a good thing
for the health of our town by deepening the
ditch which runs from the corner of Mr. E.
A. Law’s field to the Railroad. If this ditch
was kept open we would have a dry street
from that place to the depot.
It has been suggested by a number of
gentlemen that the Mineral Spring be thor
oughly repaired and improved, and a meet
ing of all persons favorably disposed towards
tliis object is requested on Tuesday next at
the Court House, at 4 o’clock p. m.
An error appeared in our local column
last week, which we correct. The commit
tee appointed from Pomona Grange, P.
of H., were for the reception and entertain
ment of delegates from the State Grange,
and not the State Agricultural and Mechan
ical Society, which, meeting at the same
time, we confused together.
The following will be the schedule of the
annual excursion of the Florence Library
Association to Waccamaw Lake, to be given
on the morning of the 25th inst: Leave Dar
lington 6.30 a. m., Florence 6.15 a. m. Re
turning leave the lake at 5 p. m. and ar
rive at Florence at 7.30 p. m., and at Dar
lington at 8 p. m. Fare for round trip from
Darlington, $1.26.
Death of Ben Watson.—Ben Watson,
the colored barber of this town, died on
Tuesday afternoon. His death was a great
loss to the community, and affects, with sor
row, both white and colored. He was re
markable for his common sense and an un
usually amiable and obliging disposition.
Ben was one of nature’s gentlemen, and it
was impossible to know him and not like
him. We care not to dwell on the fact that,
for years, he had been a consistent Demo
crat— we do not wish to ma»* this tribute,
which we know will have the cordial sympa
thy of our entire community, by the intro
duction of partisan feeling. Who has not
recognized his genuine worth ? Darlington
C. H. is not the same, having lost the kind
ly face and warm heart of Ben Watson. A
good man, beloved by ail, has gone across
the dark river, and the colored people of
Darlington county have lost one of the
brightest and best of their race. A dele
gation of ihe young white men of the town
whom he had so long served as a barber and
by whom he was held in the highest esteem,
requested and obtained permission to act as
pall bearers, and he was buried Wednesday
afternoon, in the presence of a large con
course of his friends of both races. Peace
to his ashes !
TIMMONSVILLE ITEMS.
— We are pleased to note the return from
Charleston of our chum and neighbor, Mr.
Kuker, whither he had gone to attend the
Deitshogmandbugndschafl, that is what he
called it, but if you can pronounce it now
let me hear of it, for the drum of my ear
has been very much inflamed since he told
me about it. If any of your neighbors are
troubled with neuralgia in the face, just get
them to try and pronounce the above, and
a cure is certain.
— It has been regretted by many of our
citizens, as well as country friends and
visitors, that the unveiling of the monument
should have taken place on Saturday. A
great many were prevented from attending
who otherwise would cheerfully have been
there. We know you had a crowd for the
occasion, and the exertions of the ladies de
served it, still more would have been on
hand, and it would have gratified none more
than jour humble servant,
DOTS FROM EARLY’S X ROADS.
— There was a cutting affray near this
place a few days ago between two colored
men, Jeff Lunnon and Horace Washington.
Jealousy was the cause.
— We had very heavy rains and high
wirds last Friday night ; a building on Mrs,
Atkinson's plantation, occupied by Mr.
Windham, was unroofed, large trees were
blown down and doors and windows sent
flying through the air. No person was in
jured.
— There are whispers of ahuge pic-nic to
come off shortly at Early’s Cross Roads. A
very grave committee of young men ha Ye
the matter under jonsideration. Your Re
porter will listen and inform you by card
when it will take place
— Monumental Day had quite an effect on
our law abiding citizens, several passed here
in & very dila] Mated condition, whether
from the effects of Gen. Conner's speech or
the heat of the day we can’t say. One man,
after divers attempts, succeeded in getting
into Mr Early’s store and asked the clerk
tor . 1" 1 t (.i l". spool of ball thread, to
