always be preferable to arrive at a place

— The Fstey Organ has arrived. Mr. M.
Fletcher Horn has taken the agency at this
place for the manufacturers. Let us see now
if Mr. Horn has stnick the people in a vul
nerable place. Or whether the people, in a
general seime, feel rather too vulnereble all
over to be able alter they tire struck to de-
vo'e that appreciation to Mr. Horn's instru
ments which the eu»e calls for. Rut the
Fstey Organ has a considerable reputation,
and w ill no doubt be offered cheap by Mr.
Horn.
— Cotton is changing the face of things
wonderfully. Relations between merchant
and planter are rapidly being transformed.
The patronizing air which distinguished the
former in his summer transactions with his
customers, has given place to a bearing very
expressive of solicitude. The planter smiles
the most subxtantial smile he has allowed
liinjxelf to indulge in the whole year, as lie
pm-kets liis tittle roll of greenbacks at the
cotton desk of the merchant, and the bitter
sini 1''x so irresi-tinly back that almost inev
itably some of the little roll goes back where

From all reports gathered, a very favor
able season awaits us. We cannot advise

bexpeaks a steady tone and active competi
tion. so would advise our friends to send
forward their Cotton as fast as possible, and,
as a general rule, would advise sales on ar
rival. Our charges arc moderate, and we
shall be happy to furnish Tags to those who
intml shipping us their Colton, if they will
indicate the quantity wanted.
Our office is situated in the very centre of
Hie Cotton Market; (we do our own storing
in close warehouses, where cotton is safe
from the weather and stealage;) we have
our own sworn Weigher, w ho looks closely
after the interests of our patrons ; and with
every facility of handling Cotton, we are en
abled to offer every induct?nient lo those who
will favor us with their shipments.
Mr. Henry Wagener will continue as our
Superintendent, and, from his long experi
ence in the Cotton world, we feel assured
that all Cotton entrusted to our care will
receive every attention, and our desire shall
he. not only to obtain the highest prices, but
to create a lasting confidence.

Notice is hereby given that sealed bids for
the building of a new and substantial bridge
across the Lake at Carter's bridge on
Lynch’s creek, will be received by the
County Commissioners of Darlington, until
September loth next. Bidders are request
ed to meet the Commissioners on said day
u' Carter’s bridge, where the contract will
be awarded. Contractors will be required
to give bond to double the amount of bid
and two good sureties, to be named in Ihe
bid, to be approved of by the Board ol
Conniy Commissioners—the Commissioners
reserving the right to reject any or all hid-
as in their judgement best subserves the
interest of the county.
SPECIFICATIONS .*
All timber must be of good heart pine, to
be inspected by the Commissioners before
the frame work is commenced.
Width of bridge 12 teet.
Bridge to be built on mud sills and con
fined with piling 2x6 of sufficient lenghth to
reach solid earth and nailed.
Mud sills to be 12x12 24 feet long, and to
be braced underneath reaching from sills
to upright post.
Post 10x10, length to be ascertained.
Arches to be 10 feet wide
Cap sills 10x10, 16 feet long.
Sleepers 8x8, o to each arch, edge up.
Banislering 4x5, to be let into 3 inch
boards and biaccd.
The whole frame to be securely pinned
and bolted together.
