CstaioriiAs passed off eery quietly, and in
an unusually dull way a' this place. A por
tion of tha business houses were closed and
there was scarcely anything t« attract at
tention oa the streets, saeo tha popping of
fra-eraekers by the juseniles. •
Tuans was na •ail sent from this place
last Friday, which accounts for the failure of
the News to reach certain points last week-
The papers were put la tha post office in due
time, and their failure to reach our sub
scribers is no fault of ours.
Ms. P Kalni's glees notice in another col
umn that he will lease here on 29th instant,
but will return and be ready for business
about 20th of January, fls did not tell it
all, either. We sueptet Mr. Kalmus intends
triaging a partner with hitp when be re
turns.
"“as BVb^HAEACT^ —Aiidreer
Woods, a notorious criutiaal, who has been
pending the law for a long time, was arrest
ed in Cooper Tows, iu the eicinily of Fior-
ance, last Sunday. After bs was arrested
he was taken to Florence, and while there,
attempted to wrest a gun fVom one of the
gentlemen who had him in charge, when he
was shot and seeereiy wounded He was
stilt alire at last accounts, but bis recoeery
is said to be doubtful.
A Statons DirncoLTY.—At a quilting
party, on Mr. W. J. Fountain’s place Tues
day night, a disturbance occurred between
James Campbell and Dean English, both
'colored, in which the latter lost his life.
English was fatally stabbed by Campbell
and died from hemorrhage. The assassin
made fcU PMape. Two or three negroes in
the neighborhood bear marks of bis knife
jn other difficultiec, and be should be ar
rested if possible and taught a lesson.
A oixtlimax of color went into Mr,
Sternberger’s store Tuesday, and finding the
clerks all busy, took the trouble to wait up
on himself, but forgot U> leave ten dollars
in the till for an overcoat which he took for
granted would fit him and treated himself to.
He was baited by the marshal before he ht.d
gone many steps with his booty, and taken
to the guard house, where he remained over
night, ha4 a little business with a Trial
Justice and went on bis way rejoicing, minus
fourteen dollars.
Tnnns came near being a serious occur-
rence at the post office last night, caused by
some of the ymgr/ boys who congregate there
every night to play and show the publio how
smart they are while the mail is being die
tributed. One of them, in exhibiting his
antics, knocked a kerosene lamp from the
desk, which fell on the floor and bursted
•tear where the Post Master was standing,
tha oil igniting instantly and flaming up to
fearful proportions. But for the presence
of mind of the Post Master, who hastened to
smother the blase and the timely aid of a
few gentlemen standing by, the whole build
ing would soon have been iu flames, and
probably the Post Master burned to death.
Tbs Litssy Htablks at this place, lately
owned and managed by Mr. A. J. Moses,
have been traasfered to Mr W. H. Houston,
svho will give this business his whole at
tention. Mr. Houston will always heep on
handle stock of homes and mules from which
buyers may select such anim|ls as will suit
them, at vt ry reasonable figures, He has
also reduced the price of feeding and groom
ing from fifty cents to twenty-five cents.
This will be good news to the country peo
ple, who, not feeling willing to pay fifty
gents to have their horses fed when they
come to town, have had to haul their feed
from heme and then stand oyer it all day
with a bludgeon or let the cows eat it. Any
person would rather pay twenty-five cents
And have his horse unharnessed, rubbed
down and fed, than to take the trouble to
haul the feed several miles and feed op the
streets.

Her spirit hqd an easy dismission from

Changed for a morn never ending,
Mother, dear mother, I think of thee now.
Shining in beauty immortal,
Palms in thy hand and acrown on ihy brow.
Waiting for mo at the portal.
Clad in the garb of the pilgrim band.
Once thou was! wayworn and weary.
Walking by faith to the heav'nly land.
Thro' the wide dessert so dreary;
Now dost Ihou ever wilh rapture behold

Guard me from foes that in ambush wail.
Cheer me when sorrows attend me;

Waiting for me at the portal.
