Last Salesday was a rather dull

The Executive Committee of the
county Tax Union was orgauized on
salesday by tho election of Dr. R. W.
Bates as chairman, nnd the appoint
ment of efufnes S. Hey ward Esq., ns
Secretary. This committee is composed
of the chairmen of the Executive com
mittees of the various township Unions,
and will meet again in the Y. A. F.E.
Hall, on Saturday September 19th.
All business communications must bo
addressed to the Secretary.
Captain Briggman is generally im
proving his property on "Sunny Side"
ns well as the town generally, by the
erection of small buildings and the
laying out of town lots. About forty
. lots, measuring some sixty feet front by
four hundred deep, conveniently loca
ted to tho business part of town, havo
already been laid out. It is in this
way that a town is made to grow, and
not by holding lands in a body, and
forcing purchasers to seek homes else
where.
M('Michael and Blume, the young
nnd energetic merchants who not long
ago set up business at Meroncy's old
stand, are growing rapidly in favor
with the people, and promise very soon
to rank oven with the most popular
old firms of the town. The secret ol
their success is that they spare no pains
to please their customers, not only in
the quality and the style of their goods,
but in the agreeable manner in which
they servo them. By rcfeicncc to their
advertisement it will be seen that they
h ave a splendid stock on hand, which
it would pay one and all to call nnd
examine. Long may they bloom.
At tho the time of going to press we
can gather nothing definlto as to tho
proceedings of the Republican State
Convention, which is now in session in
Columbia, except from the-published
statement in the Union-Herald, from
which we would judgo that all things
were not running as smoothly as de
sired. Even from 'this Republican
source, we notico there was considera
ble confusion .Elliott was defeated for
chairman by C. M. Wilder. The Con- -
j vention is composed of tho sumo old
political intriguers. Rumors are afloat
that Chamberlain's chances are dimin
ishing, and that Cvnningham of Char
leston is looming up as a third man?
Wo make no further comments asa very
short time will how decide if reform is
the aim or not. Wo rciterato, that, if
an honest man is nominated, the Con
servatives will naake no opposition, but
we can't go Chamberlain or Moses.

The Ornngeburg County Tai Union
met at the Court houss on salesday.
Col. A. D. Goodwin, tho chairman,
called the meeting to order and presi
ded during the deliberations, which
wero of an important and interesting
character. Tho Secretary being ab
sent, K. J. Felder was requested to act
in his place. The representation was
full; delegates from twenty ono Unions
being present. The following delegates
wero elected to represent the County
in the State Union which meets iu
Columbia to-day: Drs. J. A. Keller,
Geoge Odom nnd O. H. Ott. A reso
lution was adopted appointing two or
more members from each Tax Union
to assist the Board of Equalization, the
members of the Board who were pres
ent desiring such action. Many sub
jects of iuterest were discussed nnd
disposed cf.

Tin; Eilisto Social Rifle club mot on
Friday afternoon at the Fair building,
for the purpose of completing its or
ganization ' by the adoption of a con
stitution. Captain James F. lzlar,
1 who was not present at the first meet
ing at which lie was elected President,
I came out und treated the club to one
of those calm dignified and well timed
speeches which will doubtless exercise
a wholesome influence over the young
men composing the cUib. The club is
organized upon the basis of the old
Edisto Rifles, purely for social enjoy
ment, and is. made up of the most
respectable young men of the town.
It is certainly fortunate in the selec
tion of good officers, nnd promises in
time to he the pride and life of the
Burg. Tho next meeting, at which
several important.offices arc tobe filled,
takes place at the Fair Buildiug, on
Tuesday September 15th.
A Sabre Club will be organized at
Kuoits lower Mill ou Saturday Sep
tember 19th, at 2 o'clock p. m. All
interested will attend. We have been
requested by G. W. Dnnnelly and
J. S. Rowe Eiqrs, to extend this noiicc.

District Cburt for the Southern District
of Goorgin, in Bankruptcy, will he sold at

brances of creditors of the Bankrupt, ut
the placo and within the usual hours of

certain portion of the estate of Michael
O'Dowd, Bankrupt, to-wit:
A certain plantation and tract of laud,
with improvements thereon, situated in the
county of Aiken containing two thousand
acres, more or less, on thelvdisto river and
waters of Hunter's branch, and knr wn as
the "Casper Stalcy place. To be sold, in
four parts, to wit: One part containing
about 600 acres, with Saw Mill, Gins, large

begining at Cadle road at the old bridge, and
running to the mill pond?middle mill.

ing about 350 acres^ known as the "Kelly
Nuke Track," adjoining land of Mr. Posey
and Mrs. Owens. One part containing

adjoining lands of Uriah Corbitt, Mr. Posey,
Mr. Cadle and Mr. Hoi man.
Also, n certain other plantation nnd tract
of land, situatate in Orangeburg county, 8.
C, containing 914 acres, nr re or less, in
the fork of Euisto river on Goodlnnd swnmp,
bounded by lands of Porter, Winuingham,
Mai tin, Allen, Corbitt and others, same con
veyed to M O'Dowd by J. II. Morgan, and
and known as the "Larcy place." To be
sold in three parts, to-wit ? One part con
taining 355 acres, more or less, having the
house* thereon and being the widow's tract,
and having such shapoas appears by plat of
H.J. Sally, dated March 10, 1847. One
part containing 517 acres, more or less, ad
joining said widow's tract and others, nnd
having a shape ns per plat of Urbane Jef
coat, dated- November 4, 1850. Ono part
containing 43 acres, more or less, adjoining
the Mary and Allen Porter land and hav
ing shape as per plat of Urhano Jcfeoat,
dated December 15, 1848.

lar Saw, and other machinery and gearing
[not fixtures], at the Saw Mill.
