Dr. Elliott's watch, alter three days effort
to keep it, could not stand the pressure,
and so slipped in and returned it to its
place. He would have the Doctor be
lieve that it was overlooked and not
stolen, but as the time piece was in mo
tion when returned, it is a fixed fact that
the rogue kept it wound.up all the while.
The board of Fi rem asters are closely
examining the matter of the late firo

the family of Mr. Jas. Van Tassell, there
by producing serious loss to the occupants;
and to the owner of the house Mr. Sahi'l
Dibble. The affair demands a close sifting
to discover if possible the truth connected

The District Conference.
Our Methodist brethren have had a
delightful and beneficial gathering. The i
Conference brought together ministers
and friends from many points, and their
labors were rewarded with a large attend
ance of the public, and an awakening of
religious interest, flic church on Sunday
morning was crowded to hear Bishop
\V. M. \Vigtilnihn,and those present were
richly repaid. At four in the afternoon
the Sabbath school children had a cele
bration ".illicit reflected great credit on
Superintendent, teachers and scholars.
The Bishop, and Roy. S. H. Brown ad
dressed tho children. Tho Rev. Mr,
Zimmerman occupied the pulpit of the
Presbyterian church in the morning, and
preached a very able sermon. Sermons
were delivered at various times by the
Rev's. W. A. Clarke, D. S. Simmons,
T. Raysor and S. IT. Brown.
Base Ball.
The prowess of Ivanhoo kept him busy
as he endeavored to gratify the many
eager ones who wished to humble his
lance, and so with tho Orange Club ;
Their existence as a club has been a scries
of challenges, training, and victory. First
a scrub nine of excellent players were
worsted; then came a challenge from
Blackville club who retired after two
severe defeats. Next it was rumored that
a friendly club tho "Swamp Angels" had
extended an invitation to amuse the
public. The accomodating committee of
arrangements provided benches for the
ladies, and at an early hour on Monday
afternoon, the blue caps of the "Swamp
Angels" were moving about fresh for the
fray, and mingling with friendly spirit
among the red capped "Oranges." The
physique of the players was fine, exhibit
ing unusual activity, ami strength, and
, without iucumberauco of extra wearing
apparel; tho rival clubs went to the field
bolted and shod for work. The after,
noon was pleasant and the Oranges went
to the bat first, making six runs. Tho
Swamp Angels followed making two
runs. The game alternated ^it^y^io^ss

showing beautiful playing on both sides,
which elicited applause from the members
of the clubs and the spectators. Nine
inniugs were played the result of which
was a victory to the uupecled Oranges of
G8 to 42. We wiU not indulge in any
crowing for this suceess, as the game wns
between two home crabs, and both sharo j<
our best wishes; besides all this another
game may turn the tables; until then
however let the palm bo with the invin
cible "Orange club."
