Street Gambling.

and open sale of chances, with an occasion

the infinite delight of the seller. We de
nounce this ps a reproach to our town,
and hope the Town Council will check
all such open street gambling.
A valuable communication on the sub
ject of the Orangeburg Agricultural and
Mechanical Association slock, is omitted
this week.on account of a communication
from another friend which is in advance
of it. The letter w ill appear in our next.

Death of E. C. Tharin.
On Friday last the dec< ascd died at his
residence "Poplar Spring'' at the age of
sixty six. Mr. Tharin was a native ot
Charleston and for nearly IS years held
the position of flour inspector in that
City. 11 js declining health induced him
to seek the retirement of tho country, and
after a stay of eleven months he fell under
a stroke of apoplexy, His remains were
buried in the ei metery of the Episcopal
Church. A large number id' friends
attend d the funeral.

immigration stems to ho commencing to
flow into other parts of IhaStatc, may it
not he woll for the farmers of Ornngeburg
County to consider what they can do in
this all important mutter. ,
An agency has been established in Now
York under tho superintendence of Til
man R. Gaincs to which, if tho N. Y.
Sun is correct, there are unfortunately
ohjcctionabl. features.
If this is so, in view of tho importance
of the subject, public sentiment should
be directed against it,
The people of South Carolina ought to
know that.if I bey bring in immigrant? as
laborers alone, they arc not introducing
an clement as inharmonious as the one
they already have.
The only way to make the new comer
assist us in advancing the interests of
the State, agriculturally and politicnlIy,is
to make him feel that bo is ono of us
hyjgiving him an interest in the soil equal
with ourselves as land owners.
There is an abundance of good land in
Orangeburg County for the settlement of
one or two thousand, and money enough
too to loan I hem for a lew years. No
investment would pay us better. All
that is necessary is combination, and
unity of action and sentiment.
Ono condition is deplorable, and if we
wish to relieve it, we must either get men
to immigrate, or we may bo forced to
emigrate.
Kverylhing.clsc has been tried and
failed. Let the pcoplo of Ornngeburg
County meet together at once, ami estab
lish an Immigration society.
