Town Improvements.
A new store is being built on Russell
Street by Mr. J.on. D. Slromun adjoining
Airs. Trend well's bouse. It is to be oc
cupied, we understand, by Mr. J.C. Peers.
The Bail-Koad Company has disguised
the FRONT of oho of their buildings
(laborers bouse; by the aid of a little
paint. The Depot could stand consider
able of the suine kind?alter being en
larged.
The lumber (und beautiful lumber it
is) for Dr. Oliyeros dwelling, is being
rapidly hauled to the soot, and we may
soon expect a handsome residence1 to be
started, under the supervision of Air. Jno
Lucas.

The Rev. A. P. Norris, of the Bap'dat
I Church, is having a dwelling house fram
ed, to be erected on his lot oast of the
Rail-road,on tho"Five-Nolch road"?nico
name, that, for a street of a growing town!
Our railroad agent is happy to inform
the, public that the plans arc ready for a
new depot, we sincerely hope this is not
the plan of an air castle. The present
depot is airy enough for all purposes. It
is manifest that a new depot will be very
acceptable.
Closes Brown
The highly rcspcctablo colored barber
of our town, still holds forth at his old
stand near .Straus' mill, where ho can
always be found, day or night. Brown
shaves one so?well, that you'll be sure
to call soon again. He is also prepared
to do his part in making beards grow,
which will interest some of our readers.
In conclusion, we say: "call on Brown."
^Superstition. K
Wclcarn that the jury of inquest upon
the body .of the colored man murdered last
week atLowisville.required the suspected
ossassift to touch the corpse, whereupon
blood exuded from the wound. What;
chance is there for justice, in our courts
where such ignorance and fetish super
stition prevails. Educate the negroes;
before you vest them with the prerogatives
of stern justice.
Mr Daniel H. Baxter died at his home
?on Sunday last, and on Monday his re
mains were buried. The deceased had
reached a ripe old age, but for many
years his health bad been shattered, and
like many he was physically cut off from
repairing hi3 substance which the late
war wasted. Mr Baxter leaves a nume
rous array of relatives and friends to
mourn the loss of him whose gentle life
and honorable record, makes up the sum
of manhood.
0:ld Weather.
On Thursday last a changehcgan.which
culminated with exceeding severe cold on
Saturday. A slight fall of sleet occurred
on Saturday afternoon, followed by a
light rain. The passengers on the trains
repott very severe cold, and persons
visiting the town, in many cases were
obliged to get out of their vehicles to
make up fires on the road, to warm them
selves. This is the first really severe
weather we have had this season.
Immigrants.
A number of Laiian immigrants arc
now at Columbia in need of employment.
Il appears that.they were misled by some
.-pecillative agent, who without knowing
of places for these poor people, brought
them here, and left them in a strange
land, without a knowledge ol our lan
guage, and without assisting them to pro
cure situations. Now is the time for our
fanners to see about getting their help.
Find them for the year, and pay them
with a part of the crop, it will bo a boon
to them and their employers.

In thi-5 lot of live taxpayers (the first
live we met) two of thoin have sold
$1500 worth of property since 1873. Yet
they are obliged to pay 207 per cent
more tax than in 1S73. In view of our
condition, and the luxurious afllucnce
and coolness ofonr rulers, it is very obvi
ous, that the lime for united, determined
action to stop such wholesale robbery
has come. Let every grange, and town
ship have its meeting, let that meeting
he very early:
The Depot.
During the very severe weather ladies
and children were compelled to stand
upon the platform exposed to cutting
winds, while waiting for the trian. The
apartment allotted to passengers at the
depot is about ten feet square, in this is a
box stove, several package? ol'luggage,
and a few cbaira, and thoromnining space
is invariably occupied with loungers, and
others who render the place anything but
pleasant with pipe smoke. The floor
gapes open an inch between each board.
In a word it is the ino^t uncomfortable

from Ornugcburgis not to be sneezed at,
and wo repeat the complaint; let the ladies
