Ho&o and other Farm Stock.
The best breed of hogs, in this day of
theft, is the hog that will mature at the
earliest age and make the most bacon and
lard, for the food consumed. There is
no doubt but that tbo White Chester, or
the improved Ohio Chester, is the hog for
this purpose. There nro no other fine
varieties of blooded hogs: the Berkshire
Essex, Wooburn, Grazier and Suffolk,
but if we would raise hogs "successfully,
we must keep them up where we can sec
them at least twice a day, and where wo
can hear them if they squeal at night, if
interrupted; for this treatment, there is
none that wiii compare with the improved
Ohio Chester. They nro very solid, largo
sized, and small boned, have a good
square form, deep and wide apart, plenty
of piny for the lungs, very heavy hams
and shoulders, broad in the back, short
bead and legs. They readily fatten while
young, "or at any age. They will make
inoro pork and lard in a given length of
time, with a given quantity of food, than
any other breed of bogs; are quiet and
contented in their disposition; in fact,
they have all the good qualities desirable
in a hog.
Some object to Chestera on aecount of
color, Hint they are more liable to disea
ses of the skin; this maybe true, but 1
discover that hogs of all colors are subject
to vermin, a disease which kills more hogs
than any eruptions of the skin. The
remedy is simple, effectual and easy of
application, and if applied regularly
onco a mouth, wo will hear no more ob
jections to White Chesters, on account of
mange: Prepare a strong tar-water, to
which odd a little tobaco juico, then with
a mop while they arc eating, give them
a good sprinkling; it will keep them
clean and healthy.
The farmers object should bo to make
everything pay. Stock poorly kept,
never pays. If you are growing stock,
keep it growing; it should weigh more
each week, if it does not, you are not get
ting paid for its keoping; therefore, you
are losing money by it, and the fault is
your own. Always n member that your
grass hay, grain or other stock food, is
worth money, a part of your working
capital, and whenever you cannot make
a profit on it by feeding one animal or a
lot of animals, sell thousand buy others
that will improve on the food that you
are wasting on the farm.
The improvement of the domestic ani
mals of a country so as to enchance their
individual and aggregate value, and to
render the rearing ot them more prolita
bld to all concerned, is oucoi thoachieve*
aicnts of advanced civilization and
enlightenment; tho truth is, the improve
ment of domestic auimals, is ono of the
most important, and, in these cot;on
States, one of the most neglected branches
of rural economy.
My advice to all Southern people is to
turn tbeir ntcntion more to raising stock,
at least to the amount necessary lor home
consumption, and that of the purest im
proved blood. This thing of raising
cotton and buying meat, won't pay.
