It was n run-away match, and the parties made for the celebrated "Bridal Resort'' (Brnnchvillo). This time it was a couple of saffron colored individuals. Humbert, colored, closed his speech be fore a jury, la-d week, as follows: -'And may the Qod who delivered the Children of Israeli he with you and abide with you forever. Amen." We are not informed from what por tion of the Bible he selected his text. Meeting.?On next Saturday a meet ing of the Taxpayers of this School dis trict will be held, for the purpose of levy ing a School Tax. We would advise all Taxpayers to he present, as we do not know but that an effort will be made to open a Normal School, to suit the conve nience of one or two Taxpayers. Accident.?July Small, alias Sam Mitchell, a recently discharged convict from the Penitentiary, who has been loaf ing about tow n for the past week, was run over and severely injured, while attempt ing to get on the train last Friday night. - ? a? ? Mayor's Court.?Elvira Bellinger and Isaac Whittemore, for creating dis turbance in the public strce's, had a hear ing before the Mayor, on Thursday even ing. Elvira senteuced to pay a fine of three dollars, or go to station house for five days. Isaac fined two dollars, or two days in station house. Tho "Joint Final Celebration of the Dialectic and Cadet Societies," of the Virginia Military Institute, takes place on Thursday evening, July 2d. Orators :?T. L. Cochran, of Alabama, and M. L. Spotswood, of Virginia. Our young friend, Cadet J. Adger Forsythe, will please accept our thanks for compli mentary invitation. The sixty-sixth anniversary celebra. tion of the Euphradian Society, of the University of ?. C, will tako place on Thursday evening, June 27th, at 8 P. M. Mr. John P. Arthur, of Columbia, is to deliver the valedictory oration. We are under obligations to tho Committee for an invitation to be present on this most pleasant occasion, The Now Baptist Church, at Walhal" la, was dedicated on the Oth inst. Rev. Mr. Crimes, of Carnesville,Ga., preached the dedication sermon. 131; a old! 'Tib Near at Hvnd.?At the last meeting of the Town Council, Alder man Oliveros offered an Ordinance which anticipated the prohibition of hogs run ning at large in the Streets. This section was not passed, owing no doubt to the fact that the election is near to hand, and one of tho Aldermen is a candidate for a certain County office. A great por tion of tho hogs in town aro owned by colored people. Said Alderman voted against the adoption of the Section. His Honor, the Mayor, had the casting vote, and lie did likewise. Our readers may conjecture the reason. Crumus.?The post office at this place has been made a money order office. ?The first watermelons of the season made their appearaucc in town, lost Mon day. ?Mosquitoes arc making their appear ance. ?Tho frame of the. Elliott Truck House has been erected, and it is expect ed the building will be ready for use by the middle of next month. ?Mr. Kirk Robinson has just received a supply of "Dolly Varden" music. ?Mr. White, who is located at the En gine House, has a lot of beautiful "Sing ers" on hand. Inspect them. ?In the Trial Justice's court on Sat urday, four cases of chicken stealing were heard. ?Col. W. J. DuTrcville has returned from his visit to Beaufort. ?Henry Jones, colored, was arrested and carried to jail, last Friday, charged with "lifting" a chicken to which he had no claim. Radical Pow-wow.?The Radical leaders attempted to get a mass meeting of J those who arc owned by the ring, on last Saturday afternoon ; but it appears that the followers of this motley crew would "rather have a leetle fun." We are inform ed that the meeting which was culled (as wc uiidir land) by one who figured very prominently iu the presentment of the grand jury at the last session of the Court, was a complete failure. The meeting was adjourned, after repeated calls to or der, amid tremendous uproar and confu sinn. No Speeches were made. Noth ing done, hut meet and adjourn. At night, the attempt was ngnin made, but with l?s success than iu the after noon. There was, however, oac speech made at the night meeting. Richard Duncan,Esq. made an attempt at an address; but owing to the heavy charge of tangle-foot, he was unable to ventilate his " peetilyer idees on the situnshun." The Han Who Cheats tho Printer.
