The License Law.?A meeting of the
Exchange, Stock and Real Estate Br?k-1
en, in Charleston, was held last week, and
the following resolution -unanimously ad
opted:
Resolved, That a committee of three
' bo appointed by the chairman, who shall
{ consult witn other parties, whose interests
uro affected by tho Stato Liconso Law,
r upon the expediency of resistance to said
law, and report at an adjourned meeting
to bo hold on Monday next, the 25th in
stant, atone P?'^ .
We learn, by telegraph, rsays the (Col
umbia) Cap.oliniam, that the case of tho
State vs. W. D. Aiken for the killing of
j. W. Clark, terminated last evening in
the full acquittal of the defendant.
While the friends of Mr. Aiken deeply
regret the occurrencetbat Cost Mr. Clark
hin life, they will be gratified to learn that
the plea of self-defense has been sustained
in court.
The trial lasted five days, and excited
great interest in tho community.
The Supreme Court has decided that
payments by railroads to the State, dur
ing the. war, were illegal, and that the in
" debtednets must be paid in greenbacks.
The court also decided that citizens are
not responsible for cotton destroyed by
order of Confederate military authorities.
Information has been received in Paris
from Spain, that the Carlists are endeav
oring to import arms, with the object of
rising against the government. It is stated
however, that internal dissension prevails
in the organization, which, it 1b thought,
may prevent any demonstration.
At tho last term of the Supreme
Court, the following order wus made;
It is ordered that at the April term
of this Court, commencing on the third
Tuesday of April next, the causes on the
several Circuits shell be called on the
following order, and the time to be allow
ed a the hearing .of causes Irom each
Circuit shall be to the day fixed for the
commencement of the next, except, a*
to the Seventh Circuit, ta which shall be
allowed three days.
Second Circuit, Tuesday, April 1C.
Eight Circuit, Thursday, April 18.
Fifth Circuit, Tuesday," April 23.
Third Circuit Friday, April 26.

Boiling Water or Steam.?Take
two ounces aalammoniao one ounce of
the flour of sulphur, sixteen ounces of
iron filings,. or parings; mix all well
together in a mortar, and keep the mortar
dry. When wanted for use take one1
part of the powder and twenty parts of j
clean iron borings, and mix, by stirring- |
in a mortar. Wet tho compound to proper
? consistency; apply it to joints with an iron
or wooden spatula. The above is a splen
did cement for steam engines.
Advertising as the means ot prosperity
is not as well understood an it should be.
Nothing can tako its place. It is a fact
that no one who has advertised liberally
and systematically has felt like disputing
that it was the best spent money he put
Into business. As a horso was never mado
fat by a single bushel of corn, so a single
advertisement is never a perfect test of
thebftnefits of advertising, The man
with genuine wares to sell who advertised
them in the right way without success,
?would be a puriesity.

as quick to forgive; whose feet can run
as fast as her tongue and not put her out
of breath; who is not afraid of freckles,
or to breathe the puro air of heaven, unre
strai ncd by the drawn curtains of a close
carriage; and, above all, who can apeak
her mind and give her opinion on impor
tant topics which intrest intelligent people,
is the true girl who will make a good
woman.
This is the girl who wins in these days.
Even fops and dandies, who strongly
oppose woman's right, like a woman who
can talk well even if she is not handsome.
They weary of the most beautiful crea
ture if she is not smart. They say, "Ah,
yes, she is a beauty, and no mistake, but
she wo'nt do for me?lack brains"?of
which commodity it would seem she could
have little use in her associations with him:
however, to please even an empty headed
fop, a woman must know something.
The man who never alters his opinion
is like standing water, and breeds reptiles
of the mind.
