RVinVor.4 have been for ihr? hist, four
days rife on the street to the effect that
certain parties (whose names we have
beard) have perpetrated a forgery on the
County Treasuiy, wlicrehy one. thousand
dollars of a special fund have been ille
gitimately appropriated. It is fur
ther stated that live hundred dollars of
the fund thus fraudulently drawn has
bren restored and that the parties have
promised to refund the balance dnring
the current week; Will Treasurer Greene
furnish the public, either through our
columns or those of our neighbor, tbe.
"Jf6\vs7' with the facts of the cose upon
?which these ruroors are based ? Or state
?whether they are true or not ? Other
wise he miwt be regarded as compound
ing with f tons if these rumors are true ;
ebargiug not only felony (to certain pur
tics mentioned) but also forgery.
OUR NEIGHBOR
*~* The News is n rara, sui generis, avis
rmistnuch as it declares its intention as a
Republican journal, to second oar efforts
to put n cheek upon the dishonest prac
tices of the officials in the. State.
Hie News cannot ftHvocatei honesty
while its supporters are Radicals. It
cannot take Radical fund to aid in stop
ping theft. This would be a breach of
trust, n no'the effort will prove abortive.
It no doubt intends honestly, but it re
quires but a glance back to tbe preceding
editorial in the same issue, ( of last Satur
day) to see that it does no* very heartily
desire our sucecv?. Its cxhilarant an
ticipation ofjoy at our defeat ?mackseon
sidcrably of the Rndhvsl **V:e vielrs."
The sentiment militates against tbe faith
we would put in tho profession. It
reminds us titrongly of these shearwater
birds on the coast. Thoy move in pairs
?the male leading, and female immedi
ately in rear. As the opportunity idlers,
he catches the small fish as it swims 0:1
the surface, and with his peculiarly ????n
strueted bill, bites it in two part:-, one of
which he eats; the other falls back upon
the wave whence the female picks it up
and cats it.
Now, think wo, the News; first bite of
the Radical bait is this premature hur
rah, while the hist part belongs t" the
Radical phalanx, that of affecting our
subjection by hard blows at the ballot
box.
It is true that we issue on Wednesdays
thcTitnc*. and on Saturdays tbe Temper
ance Advocate. So that we nut v be said
between ''Times'' lo "Advocate" sheet
water drinking; but. we are decidedly op
posed losbear.-wittci' politics.
? ? ?
Those reader* of the News of last Sat
urday, w'.o see with the .-ame spectacles
as it.; Republican editor, wen- no doubt
pleasantly elated. Did it not occur to
them, as it would to any true Southerner,
that auch ungeneious joy as it anticipates
Mt our unresisting submission, would be
more noble, more manly, if tempered with
a little charitable.sympathy for a down
trodden country, just a little less mirth, a
trifle less hurra, inoliocrutic, if it is repub
lican? Or is it that the Nkws and its,
friends are still afraid of us; e'en under
the shadow of tli ' Federal Capital, sup-,
ported by unthinking, ignorant and mis
led colored voters, and actively aided by
Federal bayoiictsand indefinite suspension j
uflIul">:H Corpus? Is it so wedded to |
-..? ?r-?? r ' I' . ??^?
Republicanism us to, not seo that it
is by Rjpublicuuis'm tbut the cor- j
nipt government nt Washington and Col
umbia, is sustained'.'
We muy be willing t<? cimccdc that
Republican principle abstractly consider
ed, is us good as Democratic principle;
but it bus abmit as much to do with the
present government as monarchical prin
ciple, and we do not propose to waste time
and paper in ni.ro abstract argument.
The Nr.ws says that it does nbt believe
that theft and corruption are the resulted'
now-a-days republicanism*. Lot him strike
out, as he promises, on thi* his peculiar
platform; and he will find a solid repub
lican phalanx against him, ai.d simply
because be advocates honesty and truth.
\Yu would suggest too, as an assistant
balance, to bear in mind that charity be
gins at homo, and that until Washington
ceases to persecute, he will hardly expe
rience his anticipated democratic huzza.
The Kerkers, no doubt, regretted that
"the News'' did no' hold Court in that
locality. Does the Governor now ap
point Republican Stock Companies to
judicial positions? Is one individual
not enough Republicanism at a time in
a position?
THE LEGISLATURE.
Our State Legislature adjourned last
Wednesday. The motley brood has been
sitting one third of a year nearly. Can
the State at large doubt, that if these peo
ple had any legitimate business at home
in their respective communities and upon
which they depended lor tho support of
their families, thev would .not delay thus
long on legislative matters? Can the
State at large doubt that, it these people
desired the respect of the honest men of
thccomuiuuities which they inhabit, they
would have perpetrated against us such
deeds of infamous tyranny as tho Invali
dating bill, the Blue Ridge swindle, the
License bill Arc, Are? They are unwor
thy the position they have held, and we
appeal to all people (_ voters) black or
white, Republican or DamoOvut, native,
or adopted, invited and intruders, carpet
baggers and soap pedlars to pause in
their individual pursuit, for a day or two,
:4ny where around, and procure under the
aegis of the American teaglw that only
weapon of defense that she allows us
against Republicanism, your license to
Vote, and la !p us to stop this wholesale
robbery which is. being carried on hi ('in
state Capitol. They have dune little or
nothing save rob.

One day in the latter part of last week,
j a colored man, by name Charles Staley,
showed a paper reading thus :
"Received of Charles Staley "?"> t<>

I (Signed) (Seo. W. Sturgeon."
Staley says that became up at the ap
pointed time with his money to pay Iiis
taxes; that the crowd was so dense,
he could hot gel to the counter, and
asked Sturgeon it' he could not be allowed
to pay his taxes and go. Sturgeon
took his money from him, saying ho
would pay his tax for him, and gave him
what he took as a lax receipt; in title
tune when the County Treasurer makes
up his, books, St a ley's tsix has no! In en

hard earned comforts. In indignant
Innocence he presents at the Treasurer's
oflicc, Sturgeon's certificate of robbery?
and has to borrow money to repay his
taxes. One instalment having been ap
propriated by one robber, he has to re
place the amount contributed for tin
support of the robbers at largo.
COMMUNICATED.
Mr. Kiutok: 1 f'(\-l it my duty, ns a
practical carriage painter, to say some
thing to the public in repaid to the paint
er's trade; feeling myself competent to
express au opinion, inasmuch as I have
served a regular apprenticeship, and been
engaged in thetrndc for twenty odd yours,
always affording satisfaction in my work.
You mav hear men, who are not plens
cd with tho style of work done here now, j
say they must send their carriages und i
buggies to New York. The fa el i>, you I
can got your carriage painted in New
York or any other stylo if only you go to
the right shop, and demand that it be
done in such style anil no other.
The painter's trade. Mr. Kditor, is
brought to this stale ofdisrepute since the
war, by sonn* men who have suddenly
sprung up ir11?? self-called carriage paint

painters. They know nothing about the
trade?they cannot tini.-h work neatly?
they are no judges of limtcrial?they do
not know one varnish from another, fish
oil from linseed.
I heard of one of these professors the
other daV painting with milk and soot.
Mow is that for high? What more can
you expect ? They have served no ap
prcnti -e.-hip, and consentient I v know
no more about eoaelipninting than a
Foegoc Indian does ithout Hail Colum
bia.
Now, as to whether painter's can have
their carriages or buggies done up in New
York style, I will warrant that they can.
with satisfaction to themselves, whether
it be ornamental or scrawl work, line or
broad stripe, and bordering in any of its
various ways v ith a high polish that si all
be also lasting.
i uurk for II. Higgs, Kstp, and am at
present the only practical carriage paint
er in this section of the country. For
the present, I am done, hut I intend, at
some future day, to expasetho whole she
bang of these men and linys, who bring
disrepute upon my trade by going before
the public lieft?re learning it, and botch
ing up work with paint, that if not drawn
oil'by tho sun or split oil' by the cold
wind, will fall oft of its own accord.
