Boat trailer license may be required The South Carolina Highway Department issued a warning to boat and boat trailer owners that they may not be comply ing with the law regarding li censing of boat trailers. The new law states that if a trailer weighs 500 or more pounds or if a boat weighs more than 1,000 pounds the trailer must be properly licensed. The weight of the boat includes mo tor and all items inside the boat, whether permanently attached or not. If the gross weight of the trailer exceeds 3,000 pounds, brakes are requipred on all wheels. “Boat owners are increasing rapidly, and we know that some of these owners are not aware of just how large a boat and trailer can be before it must be licensed,” said Col. P. F. Thompson, head of the Depart ment’s traffic law enforcement division.. “Because of this, we have been primarily issuing warnings to persons who are not greatly exceeding the weight requirements. We do, however, expect to begin strict enforce ment of the law after Novem ber 30th of this year,” he said. Col. Thompson suggested that owners take their boats and trailers to a public scale (such as a cotton gin) nearby, the state farmers market, or any place that might have a scale large enough for this purpose. The boat and trailer should be weighed separately and togeth er to determine if the law re quires a license. “If the weight is sufficient to require a license, then a 406 form from the county treasur er stating that no taxes are owed on the boat must be pro vided before the Department can issue a license for the trail er. It also must have a title just as any other vehicle. The statement on liability insurance is not required in this instance, Col. Thompson said. A prospective buyer should always ask the boat dealer if the rig will require a license. The fee for such a utility trailer license is $7.50 plus a one-time title fee of $1.00. A licensed trailer must also be inspected annually and display a current vehicle inspection sticker. 1972 TAX NOTICE DECEMBER 31,1972 A J.
