Bells Welcome
Christmas Day
ROUND the world today bells
peal out the glad tidings of the
Saviour’s birth. Chimes sound
joyously!
It is believed that bells were
first used by Christians on
churches by Paulinus, Bishop of
Nola, in Campania, Italy about
A.D. 400. These bells called the
worshipers to mass; before this a
man had gone around ringing a
handbell.
Bells at yuletide have inspired
poets in various countries.
Longfellow’s poem is still a
Christmas favorite:
I heard the bells on Christmas
day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat,
Of “Peace on earth, good will
to men!”
THAT SEASON . . . Christmas means snow in many sections of
the country. When the snow has fallen, a warm sun is welcome. The
shadows of late afternoon signal that soon it will be Christmas
Eve. With nightfall, can the sound of Santa’s sleigh be far away?

Again, we come to the most meaningful season of the year. Christmas, the happiest time of all, is
just before us. The young seem to catch the spirit of its meaning early in life. And those who are older
seem to cherish it always.
Christmas is seen in the glitter of tinsel-the sparkle of twinkling lights on a gaily decorated tree.
Christmas is heard in the caroling of church bells, in the sound of happy voices and in the laughter
of little children.
Christmas is felt in the handclasp of a friend. And it is a time for recalling cherished memories.
Christmas is a time for celebrating the birth of Christ, it is filled with the spirit of joy, peace, and
goodwill. And each of these finds a counterpart in the unselfish sharing of warmth and love.
It is in this spirit that your Mayor, Members of City Council and city employees wish you and
yours the very happiest of holiday seasons. May the true spirit of this Christmas time find expression not
only for this day-but always.
