THE GIVING
OF GIFTS
Our age-old tradition of remem
bering relatives and friends with
presents for Christmas is one of
the oldest and most satisfying
holiday joys. This is especially
true if such giving is done in an
unselfish manner without thought
of like return, for it reveals the
highest type of Yuletide spirit.
Because of the well known in
cident of the coming of the Magi,
many persons have the belief that
the custom of giving gifts origin
ated with their presentation to
the Infant Jesus. However, the
idea was prevalent even before
Christ’s birth. The Romans, for
instance, used to exchange gifts
at this time.
The source of holiday presents
to children has been given differ
ent names in various places. How
ever, St. Nicholas seems to be
the most widely acclaimed source.
A Message from Billy Graham
“God is always with us but at Christmas we are more
intensely aware of his presence. He looks out at us from
the faces of those we love. He speaks to us amid the
sounds of bells and the anthems of praise. And His great
est gift comes to our hearts anew when we hear the
beautiful Christmas story once again — and believe.”
(Quotation from a Billy Graham card by Hallmark)

Christmas Cards
Joyful Greetings
Each year, hundreds of extra
postmen are added here in our
country, to help deliver at least
two billion Christmas cards.
Most of us take this custom for
granted; but sending Yuletide
greetings is really one of our
youngest traditions.
Starting in England, it has
spread throughout the world dur
ing the last hundred years; and
designing and manufacturing
Christmas cards is an important
industry.
From time to time there have
been certain fads in our Christ
mas cards; these include pictures
of Dutch children, fawns, Scottie
dogs, frisky lambs, modernized
angels, and humorous figures.
If we chose our Yuletide mes
sages thoughtfully, and send
them in the true holiday spirit,
they’ll continue to bring much
“Joy to the world”. For this
custom - one of our youngest
traditions can be an excellent
way of showing “good will toward
men”.
Real St. Nicholas
Was Early Bishop
Although it is customary to re
gard him as a myth, there actual
ly was a real St. Nicholas, an
early Christian bishop, who lived
during the fourth century. It was
because of his unusual generosity
that our ideas of the modern
saint have developed. St. Nicholas
lived in what is now modern Tur
key. He spent his life and riches
helping the poor and giving gifts
to children in Holland and many
other European countries.
A cozy setting makes home the place
for every heart during the Christmas season.
