HARK . . . Music helps so much
to set the mood of Christmas. For
many of us, the real spirit of the
holiday comes to stay when we
gather with friends to sing the
traditional carols.
Tree Lights Were
American Idea
One of the most important con
tributions to the Christmas tree
is the American invention of elec
tric lights. Thanks to Thomas
Edison we can enjoy The Christ
mas tree in a multitude of color
ed lights, without the tragedies
that marked so many homes when
candles were in use.
Tree lights for outdoor decor
ations is another American con
tribution to the holiday atmos
phere. The custom of decorating
front yards, windows, and homes
with lights has become popular,
and entire communities arc now
lighted with decorative displays
for the season.
FIRST PRAYER FROM SPACE
APOLLO 8, CHRISTMAS EVE
1968
Give us, 0 God, the vision
which can see Thy love in the
world in spite of human failure.
Give us the faith to trust the
goodness in spite of our ignor
ance and weaknesses. Give us the
knowledge that we may continue
to pray with understanding
hearts, and to show us what each
one of us can do to set forward
the coming of the days of the
universal peace. Amen.
NEVER ENDING
Whatever else is lost among the
years
Let us keep Christmas—
its meaning never ends
Whatever doubts assail us, or
- what fears—
Let us hold close this day—
remembering friends.
FAITH
Christmas means many things.
It is a spirit of faith in the good
ness and good will of people
everywhere. Most of all, it means
joy and hope for the world.
MASS OF CHRIST
THE YULETIDE SEASON IS
GLORIFIED IN SONGS AND
STORIES THAT STIR THE
MIND AND TOUCH THE
HEART. THE NAME ITSELF
MEANS. LITERALLY, THE
MASS OF CHRIST — IT IS IN-
EVITABLE THAT MOST
CHRISTMAS LEGENDS ARE
TOUCHED WITH HOLINESS.
AMY’S SENTIMENTS
“Christmas isn’t Christmas
without presents” said a concern
ed Amy in the classic “LITTLE
WOMEN” and tradition bears her
out. Whatever the amount spent,
whatever the present, Americans
certainly agree with Amy’s senti
ments. Studies show that more
than 27 billion dollars were spent
on Christmas presents in Amer
ica in a recent year.
Official Sound
In Iceland, everyone in town
bundles up and goes out - or
looks out the window - to watch
a tremendous display of fire
works. which says good by to the
old year and welcomes the new.
At the same time, in the harbor,
all the ships, decorated with flags
and lights, sound their horns.
It’s the sound everyone waits
for - that makes the New Year
official.
