Amity Lodge elects officers
Messiah to be
presented by
local chorus
Nearly 150 Newberry College
students and choir members of
Newberry area churches will
join together in forming the
Newberry Community Chorus
to present Handel’s “The Mes
siah” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
10, in the Wiles Chapel on the
Newberry College campus.
Soloists for the traditional
Christmas oratorio include Ib-
bie Laster of Newberry, sopra
no; John Drafts, a 1971 gra
duate of Newberry and a music
supervisor in the Columbia
schools, baritone; and four New
berry College students: Mike
Marley, Clearwater, Fla. fresh
man, tenor; Michelle Herbin,
St. Petersburg, Fla. junior, so
prano; Marjorie Fritz, Colum
bia senior, mezzo-soprano; and
Carolyn Hubbard, Hampton jun
ior, contralto.
The Community Chorus is
under the direction of Dr. Mil-
ton W. Moore, head of the de
partment of music at Newberry.
He will be assisted by Darr
Wise, associate professor of mu
sic, organist; and Charles Pruitt
associate professor of music,
and director of the Instrumen
tal Ensemble.
Crosby special
will be aired
Bing Crosby and Family will
“come a caroling” into the
homes of TV viewers when the
Bell System Family Theatre
presents “Christmas with the
Bing Crosbys,” Sunday Decem
ber 10 from 8 to 9 p.m. EST
on WIS Channel 10 and WFBC
Channel 4.
Joining the Crosbys for an
evening of Christmas music
and merriment are Sally Struth-
ers of TV’s “All in the Family,”
ballet dancer Edward Villela,
and special guest star David
Hartman of TV’s “The Bold
Ones.”
The Yule tide special centers
around the tradition of carol
ing and includes a number of
Christmas songs ranging from
“I Hate Christmas” to Crosby’s
“White Christmas.”
This is the sixth consecu
tive year the Bell System Fam
ily Theatre has presented a
Christmas program featuring
the Crosbys.
Amity Lodge No. 87 A.F.M.
elected 1973 officers at a regu
lar communication held at the
Masonic Hall Monday evening,
December 4.
Elected to lead the lodge dur
ing the coming year were the
folowing: Olin Eugene Wicker,
Worshipful Master; William E.
LeValley, Senior Warden; Terry
C. Shaver, Junior Warden;
James D. Perry, Treasurer;
and Prof. F. Scott Elliott, Sr.,
Secretary.
The following officers were
also appointed to serve the
lodge during 1973: Gilbert F.
Cromer, Chaplain; Jerry 0.
Martin, Senior Deacon; Rufus
Marion Mack, Junior Deacon;
Shealy Counts, Steward; Wil
liam A. Bailentine, Steward;
and Harry Longshore, Tiler.
Immediately after they were
elected and appointed, these
officers were installed. They
will assume their new offices
on St. John’s Day, December
27.
Tribe honors
continue to
be announced
Although the 1972 football sea
son is completed, honors for
Coach Fred Herren’s men con
tinue to be announced.
Eight Indians have been nam
ed to area All-Honor teams,
the All-Carolinas Conference
and the All-State team were
announced last week while the
All-NAIA District No. 6 team
was revealed before Thanks
giving.
The Conference coaches pick
ed five Newberry players for
the m y t h i ca 1 All-Conference
team with running back Don
Garrick and tackle Frank Sac-
comen getting the nods on the
offensive squad. Linebacker Ken
Pettus, end Greg Hartle, and
safety Keith McAlister made the
defensive team.
The South Carolina Sports
Writers Association tapped three
Indians for the All-State team;
the trio included Saccomen on
the defensive team and Pettus
and McAlister on the offensive
squad.
- The coaches in District 6 of
the NAIA picked eight men for
the All-District squad. Receiv
ing the bids were guard Steve
Parker, Garrick and Saccomen
on the offensive team and mid
dle guard Rick Sargent, com-
erback, David Sanders, Hartle,
Pettus and McAlister.
Garrick and Saccomen were
also on the 1970 and 1971 All-
Conference teams and Pettus
also received a bid in 1971.
The District also named Pet
tus to the All-District team in
1970 and 1971 while Garrick,
Hartle, McAlister, Parker, and
Saccomen received bids for the
District team in 1971.
Steve Robertson
accepts post
with Furman
Steve Robertson, Newberry
College’s assistant football
coach since 1968, has resigned
to accept a similar position at
Furman University, Dr. Fre-
dric B. Irvin, Newberry’s pre
sident, announced.
“Coach Robertson has held
a very vital and important part
in the development of our foot
ball program at Newberry Col
lege,” Dr. Irvin said in mak
ing the announcement. He’s also
the College’s Dean of Men.
He joined the Newberry Col
lege coaching staff in 1968 af
ter serving as the assistant and
head football coach at Eau
Claire High School in Colum
bia. As the assistant coach at
Eau Claire from 1959 until 1965,
he worked under Art Baker,
his new boss at Furman. While
he was the head coach at the
Columbia’s school, he guided
ihe squad to a 28--4-1 record
in three seasons. In 1967 he
was named the South Carolina
High School Coach of the Year.
Robertson was an outstand
ing center for the Newberry
Indians during his collegiate
playing days from 1953-1956. He
also played center for his home
town high school of Greer.
“We are leaving Newberry
with mixed emotions,” Coach
Robertson said in commenting
on his new position, “but it
offers me an opportunity to
work again with one of my
closest friends as well as an
opportunity for advancement.
The College staff, team, and
community have been wonder
ful to us in our nearly five
years at Newberry.”
Coach Fred Herren, who
brought Robertson back to New
berry in 1968, spoke for the
College when he said, “Coach
Robertson will be missed by
all of us. He has been one of
the keys to our expanding and
growing athletics program. We
wish him and his family every
success and happiness in their
new position.”
Coach Robertson is married
to the former Linda Lou Gros-
sett. They have two children,
Ron, age 5, and Robin, age 2.
The six soloists for Newberry Community Chorus’ production of “The Messiah” planned for 4 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 10 in Wiles Chapel on the Newberry College campus have been rehearsing weekly since
early November along with the members of the chorus. Soloists are, from left, John Drafts, baritone;
