The crowning culminated a parade down Main Street Tuesday afternoon in obser vance of National Fire Prevention Week sponsored jointly by the Newberry Fire Department and The Exchange Club of Newberry. Miss Hembree represented Newberry Fire Department in the compe-- tition. During a banquet in the evening William Felix Livingston, member of Consolidated No. 5 fire department, was named New berry County Fireman of the Year. Ghost story compiler is guest for County Historical Society meeting On October 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Hall, the Newberry County Historical So ciety will meet and have as guest speaker Mrs. Bruce (Nancy) Roberts, the well- known ghost sotry compiler. Mrs. Roberts with her hus band Bruce has written seve ral local best sellers, Ghosts of the Carolinas and This Haunt ed Land, both of which are in constant demand at the library, Mrs. Roberts began her career on metropolitan daily newspap ers in Florida, New Jersey and North Carolina. A graduate of St. Marys and the University of North Carolina, she is listed in Who's Who of American Wo men. The Roberts now live in Char lotte, N. C., with their two chil dren Nancy Lee and David. While overnight in Newberry, Mrs. Roberts will be given a tour of old historic Newberry homes, and perhaps she will even find a few more ghosts (Continued on Page 6) College support tops $160,000 Voluntary support for New berry College during the first three months of the 1972-1973 fiscal year has now passed $160,000 according to Dr. Ro bert C. Farb, vice president for planning and development. Individuals who are not alum ni of the College lead the way with gifts totaling $67,000. Con tributions from general welfare foundations amount to $27,000 and gifts from businesses and corporate sources total $17,000. Newberry alumni have given $24,000 while another $25,000 has come from all other sources including a recent $5,000 gift from the Newberry College Wo men’s League for the landscap ing of the new Alumni Musici Center. Dr. Farb expressed apprecia tion for the fine support that Newberry College has receiv ed so far this year. “We are confident,’’ he said, “that the significant increase in voluntary support during the first quart er of the fiscal year will con tinue.” He noted that the leadership provided by the 35-member Board of Trustees has been especially gratifying. “T h e i r gifts in excess of $58,000 have provided the kind of leadership any college would be glad to have,” he commented. The College’s fiscal year be gan July 1 and will continue through June 30, 1973. ALLISON RUTH HUNTER Mr. and Mrs. George F. Hun ter announce the birth of their 7 lb. 9 oz. daughter, Allison Ruth was born on Oct. 9 at Self Me morial Hospital, Greenwood. She has a two-year-old broth er, Michael Bartlette. Mrs. Hun ter is the former Bootsie Reagin. Players plan for 3 productions The Newberry Community Players held a call meeting Tuesday evening at the Library to formulate plans for their third season. Plays planned for this season are: Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (now in re hearsal) slated for November 9, 10, 11; Period of Adjustment, Tennessee William’s only come dy due for a February showing; and Sabrina Fair, scheduled for April. “We are somewhat concerned because so few people actually participate in the plays and attend our meetings,” said Chairman Steve McCutcheon. “We feel there is abundant en thusiasm and interest. Those people who vocally support our group seem unwilling to par ticipate actively. Yet, there is good audience response for which we are grateful. Jasper Chapter meets tomorrow The Jasper Chapter, DAR, will meet on Friday, October 13th, at 4:00 o’clock, in the So cial Hall of Central United Meth odist Church. Hostesses will be Mrs. Harry D. Epting, Mrs. Carl Setzler, Mrs. Earl Bergen, Miss Grace Summer, Mrs. D. O. Carpenter and Mrs. J. H. Martin. William Irick, a senior at Newberry College, will give an illustrated talk on Tamassee School. UNITED WAY DAY ON RADIO It was announced by H. A. Kemper, Executive Secretary of the United Way of Newberry that through the cooperation of Mr. James F. Coggins at WKDK next Tuesday, October 17th many residents of Newberry County will take turns on the radio mike, throughout the day, in making announcements and handling the regular routine of the announcing staff. The regu lars will assist, of course. The idea is to publicize the United Way, which is now in the process of conducting its 1972-73 fund raising campaign— with a goal of $46,103. GP corporation timber bidder Georgia Pacific Corporation was the successful bidder on the McCullough Sale on the Eno- ree Ranger District, Sumter Na tional Forest. The high bid was at the rate of $83.33 per thou sand board feet of Pine Saw- timber, $32.14 per thousand board feet of Mixed Hardwood Sawtimber and $17.56 per hun dred cubic feet of pine small roundwood. This timber sale was located in Newberry Coun ty about eleven miles north of Newberry. Total value of this timber sale is $23,629.00. Savings bonds sales at $33,241 Combined sales of Series E and H Savings Bonds for Au gust in Newberry County were $33,241 reports Joe M. Roberts County Savings Bonds Chair man. August Savings Bonds sales for the state amounted to $2,- 643,000, bringing the total sales for the January- August period to $22,839,300, according to Mr. Robert G. Clawson, State Chair man of the U. S. Savings Bonds Committee. In the nation, E and H sales totalled $562 million for August, bringing the total sales for the January-August period to $4,- 302 million, further reports Mr. Clawson.
