New church to be established Rev. Starnes and family re cently moved to Newberry from Greenville, S. C. Rev. Starnes is a graduate of Tabernacle Baptist Bible In stitute. By faith and the leader ship of God, he came to New berry to start an Independent Baptist Church in this city. The church is not affiliated with any Baptist convention of Na tional or World Council of churches. We are fundamental in doctrine, independent in church denominations and mis sionary in our endeavor. We preach Christ cruficied, risen and coming again. Varner has been elected to serve as prin cipal of the Boundary Street Elementary School to succeed Mr. Douglas Keel who resign ed to accept employment with the State Department of Edu cation in Columbia. Mr. Varner, a native of Woo druff, graduated from Woodruff High School, Wofford College and is presently doing graduate work at Western Carolina Uni versity at Cullowhee, N. C. Mr. Varner expects to receive the Master’s Degree in Elementary School Administration next sum mer. Mr. Varner comes to New berry from Woodruff High School where he has been a faculty member for the past four years. Mr. Varner is married to the former Miss Suzanne Poole of Woodruff. WATER PROJECT GRANT-United States Sen. Thurmond, left, was in Little Mountain last Saturday to announce a Federal loan and grant for construction of water facilities for the town. (News Photo by Bill Armfield) Final services held Monday for Judge Steve C. Griffith Judge Steve C. Griffith, 73, of Newberry, retired judge of the 8th Judicial Circuit, died Saturday afternoon. Funeral was held Monday afternoon from Central Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John M. Youginer. Burial was in Rose- mont Cemetery. Judge Griffith had been in ill health for several years. Born Oct. 13, 1898, in Saluda County, son of Richard C. and Mary (Campbell) Griffith of Saluda, he attended the Univer sity of South Carolina. He ser- ed in the U. S. Army in 1918 and graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, D. C., with an L.L.B. Degree in 1922 and a Master’s Degree in law in 1923. He moved from Saluda Coun ty to Newberry County in 1924 and began the practice of law with the late Hon. Eugene S. Blease, which continued until Judge Blease’s election to the S. C. Supreme Court. Judge Griffith continued to practice law in Newberry and in 1934 resumed the partnership with Judge Blease upon his retiring from the court as Chief Justice. In 1931, Judge Griffith mar ried the former Bertie Lee Ham- bright of Clover. In 1943, he was elected to the South Caro lina House of Representatives, without opposition, to fill the vacancy created by the death of the late Hon. J. Kess Der rick of Little Mountain. He was elected to the House in 1944 without opposition and served until his election as Judge of the Eighth Judicial Circuit on April 11, 1945, in which post he served until his retirement February 28, 1967. He was a member of the Central Methodist Church in Newberry, where he served as trustee, chairman of the Offi cial Board, lay leader and as a charter member and first teacher of the Chesley Cannon Bible Class. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the American Le gion. His alma mater, George town University, cited Judge Griffith as a Juris Doctor with its Golden Jubilee Citation dat ed May 20, 1972, wherein the ci tation read “(he) should receive a token of our esteem, a wit ness of our pride, a memorial of Alma Mater’s love and. af fection.” Judge Griffith is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertie H. Grif fith; two sons, Steve C. Griffith Jr. of Charlotte, N. C., and Eu gene C. Griffith of Newberry; four grandchildren, Harriett Deanne Griffith, Mary Salley Griffith, Eugene C. Griffith Jr. and Elizabeth Jane Griffith; one brother, Jeff D. Griffith of Sa luda; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Crouch of Saluda and Mrs. Fred D. Wells of Monetta; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Congressman William Jennings Bryan Dorn of Green wood. Grant assures water plant for Little Mountain area The following statement was made by Senator Strom Thur mond at a meeting of the Town of Little Mountain held at the Little Mountain School in Little Mountain, South Caro lina, Saturday, July 29, 1972, at 3:00 P.M.: “I am pleased to announce that a Federal loan in the amount of $100,000 and a Fede ral grant in the amount of $77,- 600 have been approved for the Town of Little Mountain, New berry County, South Carolina. These funds will be coming from the Farmers Home Ad ministration and will provide a water project that will serve the people of Little Mountain and the rural communities ad jacent to the town. These funds, along with a contribution of $5,000 from the citizens of the town, will pro vide funds for 3.7 miles of dis tribution line, a 100,000 gallon elevated storage tank, wells, and treatment facilities to pro duce water. This facility will serve 110 residential users and commerical establishments in and around the town. I commend Mayor Paul Gar rett Bedenbaugh and members of the Town Council for their fine work in promoting this pro ject and leading this community along the path toward progress. It is also a pleasure to recog nize the fine cooperation dis played by the local and Fede ral officials working together to bring this project to this stage. I am sure that their con tinued cooperation and dedica tion will being this project to a successful conclusion in the very near future. Pure water is a vital part of the development of every com munity. Industrial and domestic growth depend upon a pure and adequate water supply.” New highway facility set Plans have been announced for a new driver’s license, auto mobile tag and Highway Patrol office combination here. Sen. Bob Lake of Whitmire said that he has been informed that the Highway Department has funded construction of a new office combination which is to be constructed as soon as bids can be taken. The new building will cost some $70,000 to $80,000 and will be built on the same location as the present building on the Mt. Bethel-Garmany Road. Tech graduates may transfer to Newberry Students attending South Caro- lian’s technical education cent ers can transfer their acade mic credit to Newberry College for application toward a bac calaureate degree, according to Dr. Conrad B. Park, academic dean. Transfer credit may be given, Dean Park said, for as much as two years of the TEC pro gram for courses in the busi ness health science, or law en forcement subject matter fields.
