DEATHS He was a member of Washing- Section ton Street United Methodist Miss Stewart Miss Geneva Stewart died Friday night June 30 at the Newberry Convalescent Center after several months of illness. She was employed thirty-six years by Judge and Mrs. Steve C. Griffith, Sr. of Newberry. The funeral services were held Wednesday July 5th, at 2:00 P.M. in Saint Matthews A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. James Moody. Burial followed in the church ceme tery. Surviving are two brothers, Mr. Claude W. Stewart, Chica go, 111., Mr. George Stewart, Newberry,; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie M. Suber, Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Julia M. Wallace, Orangeburg, S. C. Sylvester Reeder Sylvester (Honey) Reeder, son of the late Reverend Wade R. Reeder and Mrs. Choney Briar McGraw Reeder, passed July 1, 1972 in the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Surviving are a wife, Mrs. Alverta S. Reeder; one son, William B. Reeder, both of New berry; four sisters, Mrs. Ra chel Henderson, Mrs. Mary Green, Mrs. Chaney Lake, all of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Ber nice R. Rutherford of Pomaria, S. C.; two brothers, O. P. Reed er of Thomasville, N. C., Cleo Reeder of Pomaria and Wash ington, D. C. Funeral services were held Wednesday July 5, at James Hopewell Baptist Church, New berry, at 4:00 P.M. R. L. Perkins Richard Lee Perkins, 46, of 111 Cannon Lane, Edwards Fo rest, Taylors, died Friday. Bom in Newberry, son of Mrs. Vera Rikard Perkins of Newberry and the late Charlie Perkins, he was personnel ma nager for Southern Bell Tele phone and Telegraph Company and a member of the Blue Ridge Council of Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Amity Lodge 87 AFM, Newberry, Sum mer Memorial Lutheran Church, Newberry, a former member of the church council, and attended Taylors First Bap tist Church. Prior to moving to Green ville, he was service supervisor at the Newberry Office of South ern Bell. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Sterling Perkins; a son, Richard Allen Perkins of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Bobby Counts of Newberry. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Mac- key Mortuary by Dr. S. H. Jones, Rev. Ernest Carswell and Rev. Pierce Evans. Inter ment was in Springdale of Rosemont Cemetery, New- berry, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. J. J. Geiger Mrs. Nettie Mitchell Geiger, 85, widow of J. L. Geiger, died Sunday afternoon at the Rich land Memorial Hospital. Bom in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Alice Williams Mitchell. She was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, J. E. Geiger of Newberry, two daughters, Mrs. Belle Banks of Ne w b e r r y and Mrs. R. L. Hughes of Edgefield; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Thomas of Chester; also seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Monday from Glenn Street Baptist Church with Rev. Donald West and Rev. Herbert Thomas conducting the service. Bur'al was in the Springdale Section of Rosr-ircut Cemetery. D. P. Schroder David Pitts Schroder, 68, died last Thursday night in Encini tas, California. Mr. Schroder was born and reared in New berry County and was the son of the late Albert and Mary Etta Hendrix Schroder. He was a retired Lt. JG. from the U. S. Navy, retired from an import export business, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Shrine. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Dewey Floyd, Newberry; one brother, James Earl Schroder, Athens, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Maude Schroder, New berry, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. V. W. Archer Mrs. Kate Eleazer Archer, widow of Dr. Vincent W. Ar cher, died June 25th in the Uni versity of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. Her age was 76. Mrs. Archer was born at Spring Hill, S. C., a daughter of the late Charles Haskell and Stelle Bouknight Eleazer. She was an alumna of Newberry Col lege and taught in the public schools cf South Carolina until her marriage to Dr. Archer in 1918. She had resided in Char lottesville for fifty years. Mrs. Archer is survived by a son, Vincent W. Archer, Jr. of Houston, Tex.; five sisters, Mrs. Oscar R. Summer, Miss Lucille Eleazer and Mrs, John J. Chappell of Newberry, Mrs. Charles T. Paysinger of Colum bia and Mrs. Matt D. Carson of Charleston; and three grand children. Funeral services were held on June 28th at the First Pres byterian Church, Charlottesville with burial in University Ceme tery. R. C. Williams Jr. Reginald C. (Joe) Williams Jr., 84, of Senate Plaza Apts., died Saturday in the Richland Memorial Hospital. Mr. Williams was born in Newberry, a son of the late Reginald C. and Elizabeth White Williams. Mr. Williams was a charter member of the Columbia Ki- wanis Club, a member of Rich land Lodge No. 29 A.F.M., a member of the Omar Temple of the Shrine and a member of the local chapter of the AARP. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Wilhelmina Yearby Williams, a sister, Mrs. Regina W. Quisen- berry of Winston Salem, N. C., and a brother, Zed L. Williams of Washington. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, conducted by the Rev. E. Wan- namaker Hardin. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. Baker be honored at dedication Governor John C. West will make the principal address at dedication ceremonies for the Department of Mental Retar dation’s Pee Dee Center at Flo rence today (Thursday). The ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery Road site. To be honored at the dedi cation with a special citation is former Mental Rttardation Com mission Member Richard L. Baker of Newberry. Phase 1 construction consists of a regional diagnostic and evaluation facility, forerunner of a regionally oriented resi dential facility for the retard ed ultimately to be developed. The $283,000 project is funded by $154,000 in federal funds, along with state appropriations. The diagnostic unit will provide studies and services to the area’s retarded, along with com munity consultation and plan ning in the Pee Dee. The con struction site is the Florence Boys’ Correctional School, a unit of the South Carolina De partment of Youth Services. Ap proximately two acres have been deeded by Youth Services to the Mental Retardation De partment for the diagnostic fa cility. Following a future plan ned move of the Boys’ School unit to Columbia, Mental Re tardation expects to receive deed to a total of 112 acres for the development of an en larged center providing residen tial care and outreach commu nity services. Besides Governor West, other groundbreaking program parti cipants include Dr. James B. Berry Jr., Chairman of the South Carolina Mental Retar dation Commission; Senator James M. Waddell Jr., Chair man of the Governor’s Legis lative Committee on Mental Retardation; R e p r e sentative Thomas E. Smith Jr., member of the Committee; Mayor Coop er Tedder of Florence; Joe L. Robinson, President of the Flo rence County Association for Retarded Children; Dr. William W.
