Six graduate with top honors Six seniors at Newberry Col lege graduated. Magna Cum Laude and 14 graduated Cum Laude in Commencement Exer cises at the College on Sunday, May 28. Graduating seniors who have completed at least 56 semester hours at Newberry College and whose cumulative grade point ratio is 3.75 (out of a possible .4) or higher graduate Magna Cum Laude, those who gra duate with a grade point ratio from 3.25 to 3.75 graduate Cum Laude. C. 29108, Thursday, June 1, 1972 S3.00 PER YEAR The Madrigalians, chorale ensemble from Newberry College, boarded a plane at Columbia Airport Mon day, for the first leg of their three-week tour of six European countries including concerts in Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria, and West Germany. Pruitt "Professor of Year n Laster is new Admissoins head William Harold Laster will assume the post of Director of Admissions at Newberry Col lege on July 15, Dr. Fredric B. Irvin, the College’s presi dent, has announced. Laster is the present Assis tant Director of Admissions at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., a position he has had since 1970. He also served as an Admissions Counselor at Maryville from 1965-1966. A native of Alabama, Laster received his bachelor’s degree in history from Maryville in 1965, his master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California in 1970, and has completed additional graduate work at the Univer sity of Tennessee. Mr. Laster is a 1967 gra duate of Maryville College with her bachelor’s degree in voice. She has done extensive solo work and was a district winner in the Metropolitan Opera Au ditions. She plans to teach voice and piano in her home. Charles Pruitt, associate pro fessor of r usic and the direc tor of bands at Newberry Col lege, was named the “Professor of the Year” at the College’s Commencement Exercises Sun day afternoon, May 28. The award, presented by the College’s Alumni Association, is given in recognition of his ac- the Year.” Earlier recipients were Dr. Frank Hoskins, head of the department of English, 1969; Dr. James Cummings, head of the department of edu cation, 1970; and Kibler William son, professor of mathematics and physics, 1971. ;; W - i a • it / ;//*- -r. ii / V i' it' « "V, ' t || i Auxiliary unit meets today The American Legion Auxi liary will meet Thursday, June 1st at 4 p.m. at the home of Mrs. George W. Heller, 2117 Harper Street. Area summer schools begin on June 5th Summer school for students in the Newberry, Mid-Carolina, and Whitmire areas will begin next Monday, June 5th at 8 a.m. with registration. At Newberry and Mid Caro lina the session ends on July 19. At Whitmire the session will end July 21. This school will have one week for July 4th holidays. Other schools will ob serve holidays on July 3-5. (Continued on Page 8) MOVING DAY-Saturday was moving day for the Newberry Aca demy. Patrons and friends of the academy were on hand early in the morning to begin transfer of the physical assets of the school for removal to the new building recently completed. The use of large trucks as seen above were donated for use in the moving. The new facility is located on Smith Road. (Sunphoto) complishments as an imagina tive and outstanding classroom teacher and band director. After graduating from New berry in 1950, Pruitt taught high school at York for six years and at Whitmire for two years. He joined the College staff as a part time instructor in 1956 while he was still teaching at Whitmire; he left Whitmire in 1958 to become a full time fa culty member. He is also a bandmaster for the South Caro lina National Guard, a position he has held since 1948. Pruitt is active in several professional organization in cluding the Band Masters As sociation of the United States, College Band Directors Natio nal Association, South Carolina Music Educators Association, and the Federation of Musi cians Local of Columbia. Pruitt has been instrumental in establishing the band pro gram at Newberry College; he directs the 55-piece march ing band during the football season, the concert band, and the jazz ensemble.
