Judges selected
for pageant
W. Harold Koon, Publicity Di
rector for the Newberry Jay-
cees and Chairman of the
Judges Committee for the 1972
Miss Newberry Pageant, an
nounced today that the judges
panel composed of three males
and two females were chosen
from a diverse listing of indi
viduals versed in the perform
ing arts. The judges were also
selected on a geographic ba
sis with no two judges com
ing from the same locality. This
year the judges are all from
different cities in South Caro
lina with one from North Caro
lina.
“In all fairness to the con
testants competing for this
year’s title of Miss Newberry,
the judges represent a cross
section of the performing arts.
First on the list of judges is
one who is nationally accredit
ed having judged numerous
preliminary Miss America Pa
geants in South Carolina, North
Carolina and Georgia.
Other judges represent an
understanding of vci?e, speech,
drama, dance and musical in
struments. The panel of judges
also has one added judge for
balance whose background is ge
neral without a specific back
ground in any one of the art
fields. Each contestant will
have an equal chance in her
talent presentation as each
young lady will have one judge
who is appreciative of her par
ticular talent presentation.
This year’s panel of judges
will seek a replacement for re
tiring Miss Newberry, Miss Jan
Rader, Saturday evening, April
15 at 8 P.M. at Newberry High
School. Lovely Miss Jan Rader,
who will relinquish her crown
Saturday evening as the reign
ing Miss Newberry. Jan stated,
“I feel this past year’s reign
has enabled me to meet a wide
variety of people, to broaden
my outlook on life, and has per
mitted me to serve as a repre
sentative of the many young
persons in the Newberry Coun
ty Area.”
Miss Rader since winning the
title last year has appeared
throughout the state as a re
presentative of the Miss New
berry Pageant sponsored by the
Newberry Jaycees at a number
of statewide and local pageants.
“Each one of the contestants
in the pageant this year is
adding, “athough only one will
be selected for the title, all
the girls who participate in the
pageant will find it a reward
ing experience.”
