Speaker for the occasion was Rev. Archie Croft of Greenwood. The es say contest is sponsored annually by the Newberry Committee for Employment of the Physically Handicapped. Baker of New berry will be honored by The South Carolina Department of Mental Retardation for his state wide contributions to the men tally retarded at a special ce remony in Florence on Decem ber 3. The special citation will be presented by Governor John C. West at groundbreaking ce remonies for the Department’s Pee Dee Center—Phase I. West will deliver the main address at the groundbreaking. Baker previously served as a member of the Board of Trus tees of The South Carolina Re tarded Children’s Habilitation Center (now Coastal Center) at Summerville. Upon the forma tion of the Department of Men tal Retardation, he was appoint ed in 1967 as a Commission member and served as a mem ber of this governing body un til June of this year. Mental Retardation Commis sion Chairman Dr. James B. Berry, Jr. of Marion said of Baker’s services, “His dedicat ed efforts and devotion to im proving programs and facilities for the retarded of South Caro lina have been of inestimable value to us during the early years of the Department. We are greatly indebted to Mr. Ba ker for his progressive spirit and sound contributions’’. Countian gains Erskine honor Mary Parr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Parr, Rt. 3, was initiated recently into Erskine College’s Helen Keller Circle of Alpha Kappa Gamma, national leadership and service fraternity for women. College students be in recital The Newberry College Music Department will present a Stu dent Recital Monday, Decem ber 6, at 8 p.m. in Wiles Cha pel. Selections will include Bug lers Holiday, Trumpeters Lulla by, Song of India, Trumpet Song, Sonata No. 3 in A Minor for Trombone and Piano, and Sonata for Trumpet. Students participating are: Curtis H. Walker, trumpet; Ronnie M. Davis, trumpet; James L. Crump, trumpet; Do nald S. Mack, trombone; Garry Synder, piano; and James C. Butt, pianc. Herren NAIA “Coach of Year” Newberry’s head football coach, Fred Herren, has been named the NAIA District 6 Football Coach of the Year, and the team landed nine mem bers on the All District team. The Indians were also de clared the District Champions after their 34-0 romp over neigh boring Presbyterian on Thanks giving Day. Presbyterian also received nine berths on the District team and South Carolina State, West ern Carolina, and Wofford each received two spots on the honor squad. The offensive team includes four from Newberry: Howdy Hays, split end; Frank Sacco- men, tackle; Steve Parker, guard; and Don Garrick, tail back. Others on the offensive unit are Lynn Dreger, split end, Presbyterian; Larry Tyler, cent er, Presbyterian; Robert Mid dleton, tackle, Presbyterian; Jeff Butts, tackle, Wofford; John Wade, guard, South Caro lina State; Wayne Renwick, quarterback, Presbyterian; and Ottis McIntosh, tailback, West ern Carolina. Newberrians named to the de fensive unit are Howard Mer rick, end; Ken Pettus, line backer; Steve Williams, tackle; Saylor Fox, and Keith McAlist er, backs. Rec Department * „ men’s court league Any one wishing to enter a team in the Recreation Depart ment Men’s Basketball League may do so by calling the Re creation Department at 276- 4856 or 276-3091. There will be an organizational meeting on Thursday Dec. 9, at 7:30 P.M. at Speers Street Youth Center. All entries must be in at this time. Any boy 8 thru 12 years old as of Nov. 1 wishing to play basketball with the Recreation Department is to report to Dray ton Street Center on Mon. Dec. 6, 3:30 P.M. Civic League dresses up community hall Newberry Civic League has decorated the Newberry Com munity Hall with the tradi tional Christmas colors of red and green appropriate to this festive season of the year. Prof. F. Scott Elliott, Sr., president, and F. Scott Elliott, Jr., took charge of decorating the outside of the Community Hall. They decorated the three doors opening upon the up stairs porch with cedar green ery and red ribbon bows. They also decorated the wrought iron railings around the porch and up the stairs with green gar lands and red ribbon bows, and they placed a colorful Della Robbia wreath on the center door. The interior of the Community Hall has also been attractive ly decorated in the traditional red and green Christmas co lors. Mrs. Steve C. Griffith, Mrs. Louis C. Floyd, and Mrs. William M. Garlington have de corated the interior with holly wreaths, green garlands con taining red holly berries, red ribbon bows, red carnations, golden bells, kiss balls, and flickering Christmas can dle lights. Mrs. Griffith served as chairman of the inside com mittee. Newberrians are invited to come to see these decorations at times that the Community Hall may be open during the Christmas season. IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Maude Eskridge suffer ed a broken right hip as the result of a fall last week. She is a patient in Columbia Hos pital, Room 217, and is getting along nicely. Recreation Department Basket ball is to report to Drayton Street Center on Tuesday Dec. 7, 3:30 P.M. MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS — Miss Joni Rader of Mid- Carolina High School was chosen “Miss Merry Christ mas” at the conclusion of the Annual Yule Parade in New berry Tuesday afternoon. She is being crowned by the re tiring queen, Miss Ellen Altman. In addition to her new title, Miss Rader is also Miss Fire Prevention of Newber ry County. Any boy 6 and 7 years old as of Nov. 1, wishing to play The Bronze Derby finally found its way back to New berry after Newberry’s victory over Presbyterian. Coach Fred Herren finds that the Derby fits just “fine!”
