Join the Indian Club Today!
The Indian Club, the athletics booster organization at New
berry College, presented the College a check this summer to
help with Newberry’s program of financial grants for ath
letes; the Club gave the College a total of $15,000 during the
1970- 1971 school year.
“This is the largest contribution we have made,” Harry
Hedgepath, executive secretary of the Club said in present
ing the check to Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, who was president of
Newberry until September 1. “In making this gift available,”
he added, “our members recognize the importance of ath
letics to the complete College program.”
In looking to the future, Jimmie Coggins, the Club’s presi
dent, said, “The Indian Club is dedicating itself during the
1971- 1972 school year to doubling its gift to the College for
financial grants to athletes. This should not only help the
athletics program at Newberry College, but it should also aid
the overall program of the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.”
Under the rules established by the Conference, member
colleges may grant 26 football and nine basketball scholar
ships annually to their athletes.
Over 500 fans of the College’s football, basketball, and base
ball teams were members of the Indian Club in the year end
ing June 30; the membership drive for the new school year
began immediately Hedgepath announced. By September 10,
350 Indian boosters had joined the Club for this year.
