Mrs. Mae A. Aull, 79, of John
ston, died Monday morning, Oc
tober 4, at a Columbia hospital
following a long period of de
clining health and a critical ill
ness of two weeks.
A native of Lexington, she
was the daughter of the late
Jeff B. Amick and Lena (Mary
Magdalene) Rawl. She was a
graduate of the old Palmetto
College Institute and had attend
ed Winthrop College. She had
taught school in Lexington and
Newberry Counties.
She was married to the late
E. H. Aull of Newberry, long
time editor and publisher of the
Herald and News. She was the
first Attendance Teacher for
Newberry County when the of
fice was created in the late
1930’s and was associated with
the office of the Superintendent
of Education both before hold
ing that position and afterwards.
She had been a member of
the Business and Professional
Women’s Club of Newberry.
She was a member of St.
John’s Lutheran Church of
Johnston.
Survivors are five sons: El
bert H. Aull of Raleigh, N. C.;
.J Luther Aull and Julian H.
Aull of Johnston; Francis M.
Aull of Salisbury, N. C.; and
Philip S. Aull of Charlotte, N.C.;
two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Aiken
of Winnsboro and Mrs. W. T.
Reeder of Laurens; nine grand
children. Elbert H. Aull III of
Raleigh, N. C., in the U.S. Navy
stationed at Guantanamo Na
val Base. Cuba; Stewart and
Emmaline Aull of Raleigh,
N. C.; Margaret and Jacob Aull
of Johnston; Mrs. Charles Ro-

Mrs. Lucia Dehihns Lake, 82,
widow of James Robert Lake,
died Tuesday.
She was a daughter of the
late John Charles and Mamie
Adams Dehihns and a member
of Enoree Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Robert
Harold Lake of Newberry; a
stepson, Vernon A. Lake of Tar
pon Springs, Fla.; five sisters,
Mrs. Epsie Buzhardt, Mrs. Ellen
Spearman, Miss Byrdie Dehihns
and Mrs. Ollie Glymph of New
berry and Mrs. John Henry Wil
son of Rock Hill; two brothers,
William E. B. Dehihns of New
berry, and Roy Dehihns of Rock
Hill.

Mrs. Bessie Hipp
dies Saturday
Mrs. Bessie Agnes Hipp, 74,
of 905 Pauline Street, died late
Saturday evening at the Pro
vidence Hospital in Columbia.
Mrs. Hipp was born in New
berry County, the daughter of
the late James O. and Mamie
Boozer Hipp. She was a mem
ber of Ebenezer Methodist
Church.
She is survived by one sot),
Jack Hipp of Newberry; six
brothers, J. Fincher Hipp and
Curtis Hipp, both of Newberry,
J. Osborne Hipp of Prosperity,
Roy W. Hipp of Little Mountain,
Ray Hipp of Fayetteville, N.C.
and Herman Hipp of Ashboro,
N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Wil
son Mack and Mrs. A. P. Cole
man, both of Newberry.
Funeral services were con
ducted at 5 p.m. Monday at the
Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev.
Joe Tysinger and Rev. J. Her
bert Thomas. Interment was in
Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Webster (Pete) Davis of 1916
Hollywood St., Winston-Salem,
N. C., were held Sunday at 3
p.m. at Central Terrace Meth
odist Church in Winston-Salem,
with Rev. George Key officiat
ing.
Mr. Davis was born in Ander
son County, Oct. 1, 1892, to the
late James Allen and Anna Sat
terfield Davis. He had lived in
Winston-Salem for 42 years and
was owner and operator of Da
vis’ Machine Shop.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Marie Hamilton;
one daughter, Mrs. Z. R. Krouse
Winston-Salem; two sons, Ro
bert A. Davis, Winston-Salem
and Bill M. Davis, Chattanooga,
Tenn.; four grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; four sisters,
Mrs. Smith Boswell and Mrs.
Jim Lindsey, both of Manning,
Mrs. Claude Sperry, Spartan
burg, and Mrs. Louise Cousins,
Rome, Ga.; two brothers, Allen
Davis ot Charleston and Wof
ford Davis of Newberry.

morning in an Augusta Nursing
Home.
