Dr. and Mrs. Dale M. Blankenship of Cape Girardeau, Mo.,
announce the engagement of their daughter, Sally, and
Edmund M. Pickett, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Pickett of
McComb, Miss. The wedding is to be held September 18
in First Presbyterian Church, Cape Girardeau. The bride-
elect, granddaughter of Mrs. Sarah D. Wallace of New
berry, attended Southwestern University at Memphis and
the University of Mississippi. The bridegroom-elect at
tended the University of Mississippi at Southern College
of Optometry, Memphis, Tenn. After the wedding the
couple will reside in Memphis where both will continue
their studies.
Faculty members
chosen for honor
Two Newberry College pro
fessors—Dr. James R. Rinehart
and Dr. James H. Wilson—have
been selected as “Outstanding
Educators of America” for 1971.
Outstanding Educators o f
America is an annual awards
program honoring men and wo
men for their service, achieve
ments, and leadership in the
field of education. Nominations
for the award are made by col
lege and university officials.
Dr. Rinehart, the head of the
department of economics and
business administration, has
done considerable research and
has written over 20 articles for
professional and trade journals
in the area of local industrial
development. He has been a
member of the College faculty
since 1964.
An associate professor of his
tory, Dr. Wilson is active in
professional organizations in
cluding the American Historical
Association, the French Histor
ical Association, PHI Alpha
Theta (national honorary his
tory fraternity), and the Ame
rican Association of University
Professors. He joined the staff
in 1968.
Hursey, Lister
on dean’s list
at The Citadel
Cadets Richard Tyson Hur
sey, son of Maj. and Mrs. W.
W. Hursey, 1228 Crenshaw St.,
and Hugh Cothran Lister, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert G.
Lister, Sr., 1519 Mower St., both
of Newberry, achieved acade
mic distinction by winning a
place on the military college’s
Dean’s List.
The names of the students
attaining this distinction were
announced by Brig. Gen. W. E.
Anderson, vice president for
academic affairs. In praising
the students, he said “Achieve
ment of a place on the Dean’s
List provides strong motivation
for cadets to excel scholasti
cally.”
Cadets receiving their first
Dean’s List award will be pre
sented the medal bar signify
ing that it is an initial award.
Others will receive an appro
priate bar to indicate the num
ber of times their name has
appeared on the Dean’s List.
Veteran students are awarded
certificates attesting their
achievement.
Hursey, a rising sophomore,
will hold the rank of corporal
within the Corps this fall. He
is enrolled in the Army ROTC
program and is majoring in bu
siness administration.
Lister will be a junior at the
military college this fall and
will hold the rank of sergeant.
He is an Air Force ROTC ca
det and an English major.
Miniature golf
tourney slated
The Newberry Recreation De
partment will sponsor the first
annual Miniature Golf Tourna
ment starting August 10. There
will be four age divisions com
peting in the tournament: 8-12,
13-14, 15-17, and 18 and over.
The girls and women will be
competing in one tournament
while the boys and men will
be competing in another tour
nament.
Registration for the tourna
ment will be $.50 and the
participants may register at
the golf course starting July
29, 1971. All participants must
register by Sunday, August 8,
1971. Tournament brackets will
be posted at the golf course
Monday, August 9, 1971. Ages
8-17 will start Tuesday, August
10 at 2:00 P.M. and the 18 and
over age division will start
Tuesday, August 10 at 5:00
P.M.

New students
in grades 2-5
must register
All students in grades 2-5 who
will enter Boundary Street or
Speers Street Schools for the
first time this year are asked
to register prior to the open
ing of school. The office at
Speers Street School will be
open daily beignning August 2
for this purpose and Boundary
Street School’s office will open
beginning August 9.
First grade students who have
not registered and taken the
placement test are requested
to come to Speers Street School
on Wednesday August 11 from
9:30-11:30 a.m. if they are to
enter Speers Street or Boun
dary Street this fall. The child’s
birth certificate should be pre
sented upon registration.
Mumps vaccine
now available
The Health Department now
has a very limited supply of
Mumps Vaccine. The vaccine
will be given on a “first come—
first serve” basis.

Monts serving
in Germany
Sergeant Toby W. Monts, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John M. Monts
of Rt. 1, Silver Street, has de
ployed with a Dyess AFB, Tex.,
squadron for temporary duty
at Rhein-Main AB, Germany.
Sergeant Monts is a radio
repairman, and is supporting
the 347th Tactical Airlift Squad
ron, a component of the Tacti
cal Air Command (TAC).
Such TAC units are rotated,
generally on a 60-day basis, to
overseas locations to maintain
a high degree of flexibility and
operational readiness.
Personnel of the combat-sea
soned 347th, operating C-130
Hercules transports, will pro
vide airlift for U.S. armed forc
es, resupply U.S. embassies and
support NATO training exercis
es while in the European thea
ter. The TAC unit has served
similar duty in the Western
Pacific area, including Vietnam.
The sergeant is a 1967 gra
duate of Newberry High School.

The annual family reunion of
the descendants of Hugh Carter
and Susan Oxner Wilson will
be held Sunday, August 8th at
Mt. Bethel—Garmany clubhouse.
