Graves receives Air Medal Nurnberg, Germany March 17 — Army Captain Leon E. Graves, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon D. Graves, Route 2, re cently received the Air Medal during a ceremony held near Nurnberg, Germany. Capt. Graves earned the a- ward for meritorious service while participating in Aerial Flight in support of ground ope rations during his last assign ment with the 92nd Aviation Company in Vietnam. He is now serving as Com manding Officer of Company D, 71st Maintenance Battalion in Germany. Gets Air Force commendation SUMTER, S.C - Master Ser geant James E. Argyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will C. Counts, Rt. 1, Pomaria, S.C., has re ceived the U.S. Air Force Com mendation medal at Shaw AFB, S. C. Sergeant Arygle was decorat ed for meritorious service as an automatic flight control sys tems technician while serving with the 37tlst Field Training Squadron at Richmond RAAF, Base, Australia. The sergeant is now assigned to a unit of the Air Training Command at Shaw. A 1954 graduate of Lucy La- ney High School, Augusta, Ga., he attended Benedict College at Columbia. The sergeant’s wife, Martha, is the daughter of Webb Brown, 489 S. W. Fifth Ave., Home stead, Fla. Mrs. Arygle’s mother, Mrs. Danniel Brown, resides at 648 S. W. Sixth St., Homestead. Boyd gets top Citadel rating Citadel Cadet James Francis Boyd, son of Col. and Mrs. Hugh K. Boyd, formerly of Newberry, now stationed over seas, won coveted Gold Stars for academis achievement dur ing the first semester of the 1970-71 school year. W. J. Fulmer rites Tuesday William J. Fulmer, 72, died Sunday night at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Fulmer was born in Sa luda County, the son of the late Tyre and lone Mitchell Ful mer and was married to the former Miss Grace Bedenbaugh. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and former church councilman. He was a farmer and timber- man. Rudolph Ludwig. Burial was in the church cemetery. Sprott service in Florence Funeral services for Mrs. Eli zabeth Hearon Sprott, Florence, who died Thursday, were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Florence with burial following in Pampli- co Cemetery. Mrs. Sprott was the widow of William Puett Sprott. She was born in Bishopville, a daughter of the late William W. and Elizabeth Welch Hearon of Lee County. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Marjorie Sprott of Colum bia and Mrs. Frances S. Fran- chey of Newberry; a son, Maj. William P. Sprott Jr. of San Bernadine, Cal’L; and four sis ters. Mrs. Clopton died Friday Mrs. Lelia Maude Warren Clopton, 83, of Greenville, wi dow of Lawrence C. Clopton, died Friday. Born in Newberry County, daughter of the late Earle and Mary W. Warren, she spent most of her life in Greenville. She attended the Church of God. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Frank Hearst of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Furman Blake ly, Mrs. Melvin Keith, Mrs. Fred Keith and Mrs. Mary C. Raines of Greenville; a son, William Clopton of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Lillain W. Bell of Newberry; 35 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Southside Assembly of God. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery. L. W. Eidson dies in crash Lamar William Eidson, 50 was killed April 4 in a two :ar collision in Batesburg. He was born in Saluda Coun ty, son of the late Edgar and Estel Stockman Eidson. He was foreman of Greg Shop of the Graniteville Manufacturing Co. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Langley. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Posey’s Funeral Home in Graniteville with burial in Ridge Crest Me morial Cemetery in Batesburg. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Nora Ward of Newberry. Mrs. Williams died Saturday Mrs. Alberta Mae Rikard Wil liams, 74, of 712 Green Street, widow of Roland C. Williams, died suddenly Saturday enroute to Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Williams was born ir Newberry County (Jolly Stree Section) the daughter of the late Berry B. and Rebecca Ki- nard Rikard. She was a retired employee of Newberry Mills and a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church. She is survived by two sons, Roy O. Williams and Wyman Williams, both of Newberry; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Evelyn) Reeves of Newberry; two brothers, Alton D. Rikard of Newberry and Julian B. Ri kard of Atlanta, Ga.; one sis ter, Mrs. Janie Nunnery of Newberry; four grandchildren, Raymond Williams and Mrs. Dianne Reeves, both of New berry; Mrs. Cheryl R. Beden baugh of Prosperity, and Mrs. Brenda Thomas of New Orleans, La.; and one great-grandchild, Mike Williams of Newberry. Two sons, Homer and Troy Wil liams, preceded her to the grave. Funeral services were con ducted at 4 p.m. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. William Link and Rev. Ralph Rhyne. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. John Merchant dies in Fla. John Sheppard “Shep” Mer chant of Saluda, died Monday in Jacksonville, Fla. A native of Saluda County, he was a son of the late J. S. and Julia Lindler Merchant. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. F. P. Devore of Jackson ville; and two sisters, Mrs. Al vin Hazel and Mrs. Clarence Hazel of Newberry. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Travis Park Cemetery, Saluda. Mrs. Ada Moates died Friday Mrs. Ada Anna Summer Moates, 81, widow of Pet Moates died Friday night at the Self Memorial Hospital in Green wood after two months illness. Born and reared in Lexington County, she was the daughter of the late Franklin David and Louvinia Smith Summer. She had made her home near Ki- nards for a number of years and was a member of Hope well Methodist Church. Surviving are eight sons, G. W. Moates of Joanna, Leroy Moates of Columbia, Thomas Pope Moates of Joanna, Frank Moates of Columbia, Harold Moates of Joanna, Pet Moates Jr. of Joanna, Charles Moates of Charlotte, and Wilbur Moates of Ft. Jackson; four daughters, Mrs. Helen Craven of Kinards, Mrs. Mildred Morgan and Mrs. Willie Mae Flow, both of Joan na, and Mrs. Anna Belle Rat cliff of Bethune; a brother, Frank Summer of Cross Hill; three half brothers, Bennie Sum mer of Kinards, Willie Summer of Newberry, and Leland Sum mer of Cross Hill; a half sis ter, Mrs. Emma Lee Turner of Ninety Six; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. G. H. Cromer service Sunday Mrs. Dorothy Hendrix Cro mer, 44, died Friday night at the Baptist Hospital in Colum bia, after a short illness. She was bom and reared in Newberry County and was the daughter of Tiller Hendrix and the late Mrs. Lucy Morris Hen drix. Mrs. Cromer was a mem ber of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and was employed by Black Rock Mfg. Co. for over 20 years. Surviving are her husband, George H. Cromer, Pomaria; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Kay) Slice, Pomaria, and Miss Debbie Cromer, Pomaria; her father, Tiller Hendrix, and step-mother, Mrs. Geneva C. Hendrix, Newberry; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Rowlette, Co lumbia, and Mrs. Hester Lee Morris, Prosperity; one brother, Bloomer Hendrix, Newberry; two step-brothers, W. J. Crump ton, both of Newberry; three step-sisters, Rebecca K o o n, Newberry, Mrs. Juanita Harris. Prosperity, and Mrs. Corrie Da venport, Charleston. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church with Rev. George Riser conducting. Interment was in the church cemetery. Edwin Yates died in Conn. Edwin A. Yates died April 6 in Wilton, Conn. Funeral was held April 8. Mrs. Yates will be remem bered in Newberry as the for mer Margaret Long, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Long. Survivors also include three sons, one who was a graduate of Newberry College.
