C., Thursday, March 18, 1971—PAGE 5 Rita Derrick, a Newberry College freshman from Co lumbia, was crowned the freshman “Rat Queen” Satur day night at the Rat Hop, sponsored by the freshman class. Carol Covey, Atlantic Beach, Fla. sophomore and the 1970 Rat Queen, placed the crown on Rita’s head; Bill Irick, Elloree freshman and president of the fresh man class, presented Miss Derrick with a gift after the coronation. College “Belles” in concert here The handbell choir of Colum bia College, better known as the “Columbia College Belles” will give a concert in Central Methodist Church, Thursday evening, March 25th, at 8 o’ clock. The choir consists of fifteen girls and is under the direc tion of Richard Veale, profes sor of music at Columbia Col lege. The public is cordially invit ed to the concert. There will be no admission charge. Mrs. Nelson is Amway leader At an Amway meeting in the F. D. Clark home in Columbia recently, the Great South-East ern P. V. Leadership Associa tion was organized. E. Wessinger dies at hospital Howard E. Wessinger, 66, of Prosperity, died late Saturday night at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Buncombe County, N. C., he lived most of his life at Route 3, Prosperity. He was a retired employee of Oak land Mill, and a member of Zion Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Pau line Bowers Wessinger; three sons, Bruce Wessinger and J. F. Wessinger, both of Pros- rity, and Robert Burns Wessin- er of Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. Donald L. Rabon of Blythe- wood; a sister, Mrs. Marvin Strom of Belvedere; and’ six grandchildren. Funeral was held at 3:30 p.m. Monday from Zion Methodist Church with Rev. Raymond Brock and Rev. Virgil Long conducting the service. S. B. Miller, 89, rites Thursday Siron Booker Miller, 89, died Sunday in Columbia. Mr. Miller was bom in Sa luda, the son of the late Booker and Martha McCarthy Miller. He was a former employee of the Newberry Mills. He is survived by two sons, S. W. (Bo) Miller of Newberry and Homer Miller of Batesburg; three daughters, Mrs. Luther (Allie Mae) Morris and Mrs. Marvin (Virginia) Fulmer, both of Newberry, and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Tyler of Whitmire; two brothers, L. K. Miller of Bates burg and Ligon Miller of New berry; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Miller of Batesburg and Mrs. Ocie Kenney of Newberry; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grand children; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services were con ducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. David Miller and Rev. Mi chael B. Fryga. Burial was in the Springdale section of Rosemont Cemetery. J. H. A. Livingston rites Thursday Jacob H. A. Livingston, 81, died Tuesday. Born in Newberry County, a son of the late John David and Sally Charlotte Riley Livingston, he was a former employe of Newberry Mills and a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha E. Summers Livingston; six sons, Allen, Earl, CArl, and Ned Livingston of Newberry, James “Chuck” Livingston of Lancaster and Bobby Livingston of Clinton; five daughters, Mrs. Thelma McCarty and Mrs. Mo- zelle Edwards of Newberry, Mrs. Ramah Ward of Rock Hill. Mrs. Carolyn Long of Florence and Mrs. Sally Nicholson of Col umbia; two brothers, John Liv ingston of Newberry and Jospeh Livingston of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Belle Evans of Thompsonville, N.C., Mrs. Ada Cook of Newberry and Mrs. Mary Chapman of Ware Shoals; 21 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Whitaker Fu neral Home. Burial was in Rose mont Cemetery. Mrs. R. E. Johnson service Sunday Mrs. Cola Blease Alewine Johnson, 83, wife of Robert E. Johnson, of Chappells, died Fri day at the Providence Hospital in Columbia. Mrs. Johnson was bom in dewberry County, the daugh ter of the late Hamp and Mittie Haltiwanger Alewine. She was a member of Soule Chapel Meth odist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Ralph Cameron Johnson of Ninety Six; two daughters, Mrs. Louis Fray- sse and Mrs. Charles F. Crews, both of Columbia; three bro thers, Langford A. Alewine, Dixon Alexine and Muscoe Ale wine, all of Newberry; three sisters, Mrs. Pierce Buzhardt of Enoree, Mrs. R. D. Zobel of Charleston and Mrs. Richard Caldwell of Newberry; and 11 grandchildren. Graveside services were con ducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chappells Baptist Church Ceme tery by Rev. Roy Durst.
