No formal invitations will be sent locally, but friends and relatives are invited to attend. nior; Reji Gruetzmacher, Sa- Episcopalians planning Shrove Tuesday supper The ladies of St. Luke’s Epis copal Church are preparing for their annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, to be held at the Parish House on Tuesday, February 23rd. Supper will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Pancakes, sausage, bacon, but ter, syrup, coffee, plain and chocolate milk, all you can eat. Shrove Tuesday precedes Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and it was an ancient custom to go to the priest and confess one’s sins and be shro- ven. Pardon and absolution of sins was received before the beginning of Lent. The day was also known as Pancake Tues day, because the people cooked pancakes to use all the grease in the house and no meat was to be eaten during the forty days of Lent. In the early church, there was an arduous period of fasting and pentinence in preparation for Easter. The public is invited to come. Jasper Chapter observes Am. history month Jasper Chapter, DAR is ob serving February as American History Month with several projects. Copies of the book The Mak ing of Geroge Washington have been presented to the libraries of Boundary Street School, Speers Street School, the New berry Academy, and the ele mentary schools at Prosperity and Whitmire. Eighth grade history pupils of Mrs. E. E. Epting are par ticipating in an essay contest on The Constitution of the United States and its signers. Medals will be given to the boy and the girl writing the best essay. At the February meeting, which will be held on the twel fth in the Fellowship Hall of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, the program will be in keep ing with American History Month. Spot announcements remind ing the public of the impor tance of the American history will be carried by Radio Sta tion WKDK during the entire month of February. Lake sees plant boost to county Sen. Robert C. Lake of Whit mire says the proposed $500- million nuclear power project of the South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. to be located in Fairfield County “should be the greatest boon to the industrial growth of Newberry County ' that has ever happened.” The plant is to be located at Parr Shoals on Broad River, just across the Newberry Coun ty line. Sen. Lake said, “We can now tell our industrial prospects that Newberry County, beginning in 1976, will have an unlimited sup ply of electric power at a reas- sonable rate. “The supply of electricity has become ever increasingly short throughout the United States and an adequate supply of elec tricity is a must for industrial growth,” Lake said. 15 candidates vie for Miss Newberry Fifteen Newberry College co eds are competing for the Miss Newberrian crown in a beauty pageant sponsored by the staff of the student yearbook, “The Newberrian.” The theme for the contest scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednes day, February 17, in the Wiles Chapel Theatre on the New berry College campus is “Through the Looking Glass.” Contestants for the Miss New berrian contest are: Martha Abrams, Joanna freshman; El len Altman, Newberry fresh man; Karen Cooper, Green ville junior; Julie Cornwell, Charleston freshman; Rita Der- rick, Columbia freshman; Joan Gonzales, Columbia ju- vannah, Georgia sophomore; Kiki Kirkland, Newberry soph omore; Janice Mason, Spartan burg sophomore; Wanda McClel lan, Charleston Heights sopho more; Joyce Meynardie, Toledo, Ohio freshman; Laura Neath, St. Petersburg, Florida senior; Diane Nunamaker, Hanahan se nior; Debbie Riser, Tallahas see, Florida junior; and Susan Sale, Irmo freshman. July Shealy, Leesville junior, will serve as the mistress of ceremonies and portray Alice in the “Alice in Wonderland” theme. Susan Little, Cayce soph omore is the reigning Miss New berrian. Mr. and Mrs. David Luther Ruff of Newberry announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Bonnie Lunelle, to Harry Keisler Harmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Harmon of Pomaria. The wedding is planned for Sunday, April 11, 1971 at 3 p.m. in St. Phillips Lutheran Church, Route 3, Prosperity. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.
