C., Thursday, Jan. 28, 1971 Dr and Mrs. George Robert Blalock of 704 South Broad St., Clinton, announce the engage ment of their daughter, Almena Brooks, to Dr. Edward Kirby Lominick, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kirby Lominack of 1819 McHardy Street. Miss Blalock is the grand daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Allie James Milling and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jacks Blalock. She is a gra duate of Converse College, where she received a B.A. de- - gree in English. While there she was a member of Mortar Board and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Univer sities. She is presently teach ing at Trinitv School in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Lominack is the grandson of Mrs. Robert Meredith Lomi nack of Newberry and the late Mr. Lominack. and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Erie Wheeler. He is a graduate of Clemson University, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Chi fraternity and Who’s Who A- mong American Colleges and Universities. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was a mem ber of Alpha Kappa Kappa me dical fraternity. He is taking a residency in internal medi cine at Emory University Hos pital in Atlanta, Ga. The wedding will take place at noon, April 10, at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Youth committee has meeting TNT, Tomorrow’s Newberry Today, is the Newberry County Development Board’s Youth Committee. Consisting of five students from each of the fol lowing schools: Newberry Col lege, Newberry High, Mid-Caro lina High, and Whitmire High, the committee meets approxi mately twice a month. At the latest meeting Ginger Malone from Whitmire was elected chairman; Bill Halsey from Newberry College, vice-chair man; and Debbie Bedenbaugh from Mid-Carolina, secretary. David W. Morrison of the de velopment board is counselor. This youth committee was conceived to establish communi cation between the youth of the county and the officials who lead the growth of the county. Mr. Morrison stated that he de sired to know what the youth want in tomorrow's forwardly progressing Newberry County. The main topic of concern has thus far been drug abuse. The committee has had guest com mentators and is presently plan ning for an informal speaker from Columbia to talk on the organization of a telephone hot line. Whitmire members explained that their school has set up a biracial committee with an equal number of members from both races who get together and talk about their problems. The TNT members suggest this as a point worth noticing for all schools. NEWCOMERS CLUB MEETING HELD The Newcomers Club held its January n.\.eting at the home of Mrs. Eugene C. Griffith with 41 ladies present. Mrs. Bill Martin, Mrs. A. C. Miller, Jr., Mrs. Ernst Abra ham, and Mrs. Edwin McKin ney were introduced as new members. Hostesses were Mrs. Robert T. Brown, Mrs. Charles Gray, Mrs. Lindsay Hale, and Mrs. Albert Mature. The program, “Gourmet Fun” was presented by Mrs. Emmett Nichols, who had prepared a variety of interesting dishes to share with the group. The door prize, an Easter Bunny cake baked by Mrs. Ni chols. was won by Mrs. Wil liam L. Brice. The annual bridge luncheon will be held February 17 at Mid-Carolina Country Club. Bridge will begin at 9:30 and luncheon will be served at 12:00. Definite reservations must be made by February 10. The cost will be $2.08 per person. POEM INCLUDED IN ANTHOLOGY Mrs. F. Scott Elliott. Sr. has just received notification that her poem, “What Great Books Mean to Me” has been accepted for publication in The National Poetry Anthology, 1971, verse written by teachers and libra rians. The edition will be off the press in April. There were about 450 poems selected from over 6000 manu scripts submitted in January by teachers, instructors, pro fessors and librarians from 6000 high schools, colleges and universities throughout the coun try. This is the 13th year that Mrs. Elliott has had a poem included in the annual antho logy. Mrs. Elliott is a former high school teacher, having taught at Columbia High School, Ashe ville Senior High School, Dur ham High School and Whitmire High School. She is a member of the Piedmont Branch of Na tional League of American Pen- women and is president of the Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kap pa Gamma, a teacher’s soro rity. She has been listed in “Who’s Who of American Wo men” and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest”. MEETS THURSDAY The American Legion Auxi liary will meet on Thursday afternoon, February 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Roy Whitaker, 1706 Bachman St. As sociate hostesses will be Mrs. James Brown, Mrs. Joe Ma yer, Mrs. Elmer Epting, Mrs. W. S. Chapman and Mrs. Olin Wessinger. Prof. F. Scott Elliott of the Newberry College faculty will be the speaker for the after noon. A group of children from the Newberry Academy under the direction of Mrs. Harry Epting will give a musical program. All members are urged to attend. POSTER WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED At a special Awards Pro gram on Monday, February 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the County Agriculture Build ing in Newberry, winners m the “Beauty Is” poster and essay contest will be announced. Mrs. Richard L. Baker, Coun ty Beautification Chairman will present certificates of recogni tion and cash awards to the first, second and third place winners in the poster contest for grades 1-3 and 4-7 and the essav contest for grades 8 - 12. Mrs. Emily Pierce, Beautifi cation Supervisor, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tou rism, will also show the new est film on litter prevention, “The Little Monster”. The pu blic is invited. NEWBERRY STUDENT IN FRATERNITY Thirteen students in the Col lege of Arts and Sciences, two from the School of Dentistry, two from the School of Law, one from the School of Theo logy and one faculty member at Emory University have been selected for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, national 1 adership honorary fraternity for the 1970-71 school year. DDK honors men who have significantly contributed to the advancement and progress of the University. Among the new members is Dennis Woodrow Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Nel- ton of 1227 Glenn Street. Den nis is a student in the Dental School at Emory. ATTEND SEMINAR Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nelsen, Mrs. Olive White and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Ruff attended an Amway Seminar at Gate House Restaurant, Columbia, January 16. Mrs. Nelsen had a part in the program of the all-day meeting. UDC CHAPTER MEETS TUESDAY Drayton Rutherford Chap ter, UDC, will meet Tuesday, February 2 at 4 p.m. at the home of Mrs. J. J. Chappell. Associate hostesses will be Mrs. L. G. McCullough and Mrs. R. L. Baker. Tribe continues winning streak A 28-point lead at halftime and dominance on the boards gave Newberry its fourth win in a row and tenth of the sea son against the Falcons from Pfeiffer College 92-66 Saturday night. Scoring almost at will, the Indians were paced in the open ing minutes by 6’7” forward Mike Barb and Joe Styles and Steve Meadows, who scored ten and nine points respectively in the first half while Steve Hobson collected 16 rebounds to keep the Falcon offense from scoring field goals in a total of nine and a half minutes during the first half. The Redskins went to the locker room at intermission with a comfortable 50-22 lead at intermission. The second half was all Newberry as the tribe held the visitors to only 7 points during the first six minutes while they built up a 41-point lead 70-29 with twelve minutes remain ing. Coach Nield Gordon put in his bench for the rest of the contest, giving them much need ed experience. Gordon’s Indians have come back strong in the new year by winning four in a row and the last 7 of 9 games.
