A fourth factor that traffic
safety officials believe has had
a significant part in our high
death toll came as a result of
so - called * freak*’ accidents.
Happenings such as a person
stepping out of a mobile home
while it is being towed or a
pe rson racing a horse on a dirt
road only to have the animal
stumble as he approached a
more traveled highway and
throw him under the wheels of
a car The Highway Depart
ment lists more than 20 such
"freak * or "mystery** accidents
in 1970. more than double last

The number of pedestrians
killed this year has also played
a large roll in the overall death
toll rise* Through Dee-ember 30.
a total of 186 pedestrians had
died in traffic while 165 were
reported for the entire year of
1969
While all figures used here
are tentative, the Department
will release official figures as
soon as they can be* gathered
once the year 1970 is ended
